Multimedia, Cognitive Load and Pedagogy
2005The current emphasis, in education and training, on the use of instructional technology has fostered a shift in focus and renewed interest in integrating human learning and pedagogical research. This shift has involved the technological and pedagogical integration between learner cognition, instructional design, and instructional technology, with much ...

Managing cognitive load—recent trends in cognitive load theory
Learning and Instruction, 2002Cognitive Load Theory (CLT) is an internationally well known and widespread theory, which has been empirically confirmed in numerous studies. Kirschner, the guest editor of this issue, has been successful in obtaining papers of internationally acknowledged representatives of CLT, which give an excellent overview of the current state of the field ...

Cognitive Load in Collaboration - Brainstorming
2011 44th Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences, 2011Designing collaboration support is a complex social technical task. One of the key production factors in collaboration is cognitive effort. Understanding the cognitive load involved in collaborative tasks is therefore important to support the design of collaboration support.

This chapter investigates the effect of stress on cognitive load measurement using GSR as a physiological index of CL. The experiment utilises feelings of lack of control, task failure and social-evaluation to induce stress. The experiment described demonstrates that mean GSR can be used as an index of cognitive load during task execution, but that ...

Deception is thought to involve greater cognitive load than honesty, and in practice has been shown to increase reaction time (RT). However, this has only been measured with closed-questions delivered by a computer. We employed a dual-task methodology, the Detection Response Task (DRT), to assess cognitive load in a live, open-question interview.

Cognitive load theory is a learning and instruction theory that describes instructional design implications of human cognitive architecture outlined in the previous chapter. Based on these theoretically and empirically established instructional consequences (usually referred to as cognitive load effects or principles), the theory makes specific ...
