DEUCE : a test-bed for evaluating ESL competence criteria [PDF]

open access: yes, 2003
This paper describes work in progress to apply a Web-based facility for evaluating differing criteria for English language competence. The proposed system, Discriminated Evaluation of User's Competence with English (DEUCE), addresses the problem of ...

Linguistic competence, Communicative Competence and Interactional Competence

open access: yesINTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF COMPUTERS & TECHNOLOGY, 2019
Linguistic competence, communicative competence, and interactional competence have had profound impact on second language teaching, learning, and testing. Although a significant number of studies have been conducted on these three competences, they have not been conflated for discussion in a single study.

Sequence determinants of RNA G‐quadruplex unfolding by Arg‐rich regions

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We show that Arg‐rich peptides selectively unfold RNA G‐quadruplexes, but not RNA stem‐loops or DNA/RNA duplexes. This length‐dependent activity is inhibited by acidic residues and is conserved among SR and SR‐related proteins (SRSF1, SRSF3, SRSF9, U1‐70K, and U2AF1).

Lessons learned: overcoming common challenges in reconstructing the SARS-CoV-2 genome from short-read sequencing data via CoVpipe2 [version 2; peer review: 2 approved]

open access: yesF1000Research
Background Accurate genome sequences form the basis for genomic surveillance programs, the added value of which was impressively demonstrated during the COVID-19 pandemic by tracing transmission chains, discovering new viral lineages and mutations, and ...

All we need is the candidate’s face: the irrelevance of information about political coalition affiliation and campaign promises [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
Recent research has indicated that judgments of competence based on very short exposure to political candidates' faces reliably predict electoral success.

Cell density–dependent nuclear‐cytoplasmic shuttling of SETDB1 integrates with Hippo signaling to regulate YAP1‐mediated transcription

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
At low cell density, SETDB1 and YAP1 accumulate in the nucleus. As cell density increases, the Hippo pathway is gradually activated, and SETDB1 is associated with increased YAP1 phosphorylation. At high cell density, phosphorylated YAP1 is sequestered in the cytoplasm, while SETDB1 becomes polyubiquitinated and degraded by the ubiquitin–proteasome ...

DNA methylation changes in endometrium and correlation with gene expression during the transition from pre-receptive to receptive phase

open access: yesScientific Reports, 2017
The inner uterine lining (endometrium) is a unique tissue going through remarkable changes each menstrual cycle. Endometrium has its characteristic DNA methylation profile, although not much is known about the endometrial methylome changes throughout the

Deep neural network based data-driven virtual sensor in vehicle semi-active suspension real-time control

open access: yesTransport, 2022
This research presents a data-driven Neural Network (NN)-based Virtual Sensor (VS) that estimates vehicles’ Unsprung Mass (UM) vertical velocity in real-time. UM vertical velocity is an input parameter used to control a vehicle’s semi-active suspension.

PARP inhibitors elicit distinct transcriptional programs in homologous recombination competent castration‐resistant prostate cancer

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
PARP inhibitors are used to treat a small subset of prostate cancer patients. These studies reveal that PARP1 activity and expression are different between European American and African American prostate cancer tissue samples. Additionally, different PARP inhibitors cause unique and overlapping transcriptional changes, notably, p53 pathway upregulation.
