Complement inhibitors in tears of different species

Experimental Eye Research, 1984
Tears of various species were investigated for the presence of inhibitors of the complement system. Rat and mouse tears contained strong anti-complementary activity, whereas goat, guinea pig, rabbit and rhesus monkey gave approximately the same inhibition as human tears. The chicken and cat only contained weak anti-complementary activity.

The Complement Inhibitor Eculizumab in Paroxysmal Nocturnal Hemoglobinuria

New England Journal of Medicine, 2006
We tested the safety and efficacy of eculizumab, a humanized monoclonal antibody against terminal complement protein C5 that inhibits terminal complement activation, in patients with paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria (PNH).We conducted a double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled, multicenter, phase 3 trial.

Complement inhibitors as therapeutic agents

Clinical Immunology Newsletter, 1997
Summary This report has described several currently evolving strategies and therapeutic agents designed to inhibit the complement system. Many others can be envisioned. Analagous to the utility of therapeutic agents that inhibit the coagulation cascade, it can be anticipated that complement inhibitors will find an important niche in our armamentarium

Current and Future Pharmacologic Complement Inhibitors

Hematology/Oncology Clinics of North America, 2015
The availability of anticomplement therapies has been a major achievement for medicine in the last decade. Indeed, eculizumab has changed the treatment paradigm of paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria and atypical hemolytic uremic syndrome and promises to do the same in several other human complement-mediated diseases. Nowadays, a 10-year experience has

Complement C1-inhibitor expression in Alzheimer's disease

Acta Neuropathologica, 1998
In situ and in vitro studies suggest that activation of locally produced complement factors may act as a mediator between amyloid deposits and neurodegenerative changes seen in Alzheimer's disease (AD). C1-esterase inhibitor (C1-Inh), which regulates activation of C1 of the complement classical pathway, can be detected immunohistochemically in its ...

Complement Inhibitors in Trauma

2003
Complement is a series or more than 30 proteins in the serum and on cells that are proteolytically cleaved, forming an activated cascade that represents an extremely effective method of pathogen lysis. However, inappropriate or excessive complement activation may become a double-edged sword by causing excessive tissue destruction as well as destroying ...

Evaluation of Complement Inhibitors

2000
Complement activation is part of the normal homeostatic process, removing foreign particles, effete cells, and immune complexes and killing invading microorganisms. However, there are situations in which complement activation may, if uncontrolled, contribute significantly to the pathogenesis of certain disease processes.

Use of complement inhibitors in tissue injury

Trends in Molecular Medicine, 2002
A great deal of information has accumulated implicating the complement system in several human disease processes. Although some of this information is circumstantial, protein inhibitors of the complement system have been developed and applied successfully to experimental disease models in animals.

Two complement inhibitors in mouse sera

Medical Microbiology and Immunology, 1973
Two inhibitors of the guinea pig complement components C1 and C3 are demonstrated in normal DBA and anti C57 DBA isoimmune sera. The specificity of the inhibitors is proved by their complete absorption with EAC1 and EAC1423 cells, respectively. Both inhibitors are found in the 7S fraction of normal DBA mouse serum, which correlates well with the data ...
