Tykhonov well-posedness of fixed point problems in contact mechanics

open access: yesFixed Point Theory and Algorithms for Sciences and Engineering, 2022
We consider a fixed point problem S u = u $\mathcal {S}u=u$ where S : C ( R + ; X ) → C ( R + ; X ) ${\mathcal {S}:C(\mathbb{R}_{+};X)\to C(\mathbb{R}_{+};X)}$ is an almost history-dependent operator.

Calpain small subunit homodimerization is robust and calcium‐independent

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Calpains dimerize via penta‐EF‐hand (PEF) domains. Using single‐molecule force spectroscopy, we measured the strength and kinetics of PEF–PEF homodimer binding. The interaction is robust, shows a transient conformational step before dissociation, and remains largely insensitive to Ca2+.

A note on the effect of surface topography on adhesion of hard elastic rough bodies with low surface energy

open access: yesJournal of the Mechanical Behavior of Materials, 2019
Adhesion between bodies is strongly influenced by surface roughness. In this note, we try to clarify how the statistical properties of the contacting surfaces affect the adhesion under the assumption of long-range adhesive interactions.

A methionine‐lined active site governs carbocation stabilization and product specificity in a bacterial terpene synthase

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This study reveals a unique active site enriched in methionine residues and demonstrates that these residues play a critical role by stabilizing carbocation intermediates through novel sulfur–cation interactions. Structure‐guided mutagenesis further revealed variants with significantly altered product profiles, enhancing pseudopterosin formation. These

A nonlocal contact formulation for confined granular systems

open access: yes, 2011
We present a nonlocal formulation of contact mechanics that accounts for the interplay of deformations due to multiple contact forces acting on a single particle.

AAA+ protein unfoldases—the Moirai of the proteome

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
AAA+ unfoldases are essential molecular motors that power protein degradation and disaggregation. This review integrates recent cryo‐electron microscopy (cryo‐EM) structures and single‐molecule biophysical data to reconcile competing models of substrate translocation.

Biomechanical Evaluation of Isotropic and Shell-Core Composite Meniscal Implants for Total Meniscus Replacement: A Nonlinear Finite Element Study

open access: yesIEEE Access, 2019
Loss of meniscal function due to symptomatic meniscal tears or meniscectomy leads to biomechanical instability and articular cartilage degeneration. Synthetic meniscal implants ought to ideally restore normal joint contact mechanics and thus forfending ...

pH‐mediated activation of the lysosomal arginine sensor SLC38A9

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Cells monitor nutrient levels via the lysosomal transporter SLC38A9 to activate the mechanistic target of rapamycin complex 1 (mTORC1). This study reveals that SLC38A9 function is regulated by pH. We identified histidine 544 as a critical pH sensor that undergoes conformational changes to control amino acid efflux from lysosomes; therefore, it ...

Contact mechanics and friction: Role of adhesion

open access: yesFriction
This paper presents an overview of the role of adhesion in various tribological phenomena. We discuss (1) adhesion and adhesive hysteresis in rough contacts, (2) adhesive contribution to dry friction, (3) properties of adhesive contacts under tangential ...

Leak-rate of seals: effective medium theory and comparison with experiment

open access: yes, 2009
Seals are extremely useful devices to prevent fluid leakage. We present an effective medium theory of the leak-rate of rubber seals, which is based on a recently developed contact mechanics theory.
