Membrane tubes with active pumping: water transport, vacuole formation and osmoregulation [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv
The need for organisms to regulate their volume and osmolarity when surrounded by freshwater is a basic physical challenge for many bacteria, protists and algae. Taking inspiration from the contractile vacuole complex found in many protists, we discuss how simple models of active membrane tubes can give insights into the fluid and active ionic ...

Conserved and Novel Properties of Clathrin-Mediated Endocytosis in Dictyostelium Discoideum [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
The protein clathrin mediates one of the major pathways of endocytosis from the extracellular milieu and plasma membrane. Clathrin functions with a network of interacting accessory proteins, one of which is the adaptor complex AP-2, to co-ordinate ...

Study of LvsB in Dictyostelium discoideum provides insights into the Chediak-Higashi syndrome [PDF]

open access: yes, 2007
The Chediak-Higashi Syndrome is a disorder affecting lysosome biogenesis. At the cellular level, the Chediak-Higashi syndrome is characterized by the presence of grossly enlarged lysosomes in every tissue.

A novel model for fluid secretion by the trypanosomatid contractile vacuole apparatus

open access: yesJournal of Cell Biology, 1979
We have studied fluid secretion by the contractile vacuole apparatuss of the trypanosomatid flagellate Leptomonas collosoma with thin sections and freeze-fracture replicas of cells stabilized by ultrarapid freezing without prior fixation or ...

Morphological and molecular identification of epibiontic sessilid Epistylis semiciculus n. sp. (ciliophora, Peritrichia) from Procambarus clarkia (Crustacea, Decapoda) in China

open access: yesInternational Journal for Parasitology: Parasites and Wildlife, 2019
Data on sessilinasis from Procambarus clarkia are limited. This study investigates sessilid diversity in Hubei Province, China in 2016. Procambarus clarkia pereopods were covered by two sessilid morphotypes in April and May, and the gills were adhered by

Complex sphingolipid profiling and identification of an inositol-phosphorylceramide synthase in Dictyostelium discoideum

open access: yesiScience
Summary: Dictyostelium discoideum is a professional phagocyte frequently used to study cellular processes underlying the recognition, engulfment, and infection course of microbial pathogens.

Remodeling of Fibrous Extracellular Matrices by Contractile Cells: Predictions from Discrete Fiber Network Simulations [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2014
Contractile forces exerted on the surrounding extracellular matrix (ECM) lead to the alignment and stretching of constituent fibers within the vicinity of cells. As a consequence, the matrix reorganizes to form thick bundles of aligned fibers that enable force transmission over distances larger than the size of the cells.
