Mechanism of the Diastole of Contractile Vacuoles
Nature, 1937IT is still not known what causes the passage of fluid from the cytoplasm into the contractile vacuole of a protozoan. In a recently published paper1, Picken has claimed that the rate of this ” infiltration” of fluid into the vacuole will be proportional, among other things, to the difference between the hydrostatic pressure of the cytoplasm (which is ...

A Mutant of Chlamydomonas moewusii lacking contractile vacuoles*
The Journal of Protozoology, 1960SYNOPSIS.An X‐ray induced mutant (S‐16) of Chlamydomonas moewusii Gerloff lacked observable contractile vacuoles. Unlike the wild strain with vacuoles, S‐16 survived only when the osmotic pressure of the medium was above 1.5 atmospheres and was provided by compounds that penetrate cell membranes slowly, like NaCl or sucrose.

Dimensionality and contractile vacuole function in ciliated protozoa
Journal of Experimental Zoology, 1982AbstractIt is believed by some (Günther, '75a) that the dimensional theory of biological similarity is somehow not appropriate at the microscopic and cellular levels. The results of the present study of contractile vacuoles of ciliated protozoa, ranging in length from 25 to 150 μm, sugggests, however, that the theory is appropiate. The data demonstrate

Fine Structure of the Contractile Vacuole Pore in Paramecium*
The Journal of Protozoology, 1973SYNOPSISThe pore through which a Paramecium contractile vacuole communicates with the external environment is a 1.2 μm long and 1 μm diameter cylindrical orifice in the pellicle. During diastole, the vacuole:pore junction is closed by a substantial diaphragm which parts to the side at systole.

The formation of contractile vacuoles in Amoeba proteus
Journal of Morphology, 1927AbstractThe history of investigations on the contractile vacuole is reviewed briefly and brought up to date. The study of the contractile vacuole in Amoeba proteus is considered from standpoints of origin, structure, behavior, and function. The results are obtained from a prolonged study of normal organisms and from their reactions when introduced into ...

Fine structure of fluid segregation organelles of Paramecium contractile vacuoles
Journal of Ultrastructure Research, 1976The fluid segregation organelles of the Paramecium contractile vacuole are 50-nm diameter tubules, one end of which terminates blindly in the cytoplasm, the other open to the radial canals throughout the vacuolar cycle. The tubules are composed of coated membrane exhibiting 6 × 12 nm peg-shaped elements attached to the cytoplasmic dense lamina ...
