Latitudinal structure of the heliospheric current sheet and corotating streams measured by WIND and ULYSSES

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, 1997
All heliospheric current sheet (HCS) crossings and corotating solar wind streams detected by both WIND and Ulysses have been identified. These measurements were made when Ulysses was in its fast latitudinal scan (at a heliocentric radial distance of ∼1.4 AU) and WIND was in the ecliptic plane near the Earth. Instantaneous solar wind velocities are used

Examining the Radial Evolution of a Corotating Interaction Region Observed at STEREO-A and MAVEN

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal
Corotating interaction regions (CIRs) are long-lasting solar wind structures that persist over multiple solar rotations. These structures accelerate particles throughout the heliosphere and can impart significant energy onto planetary ionospheres and ...

Development of substorm bulges during different solar wind structures [PDF]

open access: yesAnnales Geophysicae, 2009
Using data from WIND spacecraft, we investigated the difference in substorm bulge development during different types of solar wind flow: solar wind recurrent streams (RS), corotating interaction regions (CIR), magnetic clouds (MC), and the region of ...

Corotating pressure waves without streams in the solar wind [PDF]

open access: yes, 1983
Voyager 1 and 2 magnetic field and plasma data are presented which demonstrate the existence of large scale, corotating, non-linear pressure waves between 2 AU and 4 AU that are not accompanied by fast streams.

On the Effects of the Solar Wind Structure in the Global Distribution of dBH/dt ${\text{dB}}_{H}/\text{dt}$ Spikes During Geomagnetic Storms

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Space Physics, Volume 131, Issue 9, September 2026.
Abstract Variations in the solar wind, particularly those associated with interplanetary coronal mass ejections (ICMEs) and high‐speed streams (HSSs), drive geomagnetic disturbances that produce rapid changes in the ground magnetic field. These variations, commonly quantified by the time derivative of the horizontal magnetic field dBH/dt $\left({\text ...

The effect of the high-speed stream following the corotating interaction region on the geomagnetic activities [PDF]

open access: yesAnnales Geophysicae, 1997
Abstract. The high-speed stream following the corotating interaction regions (CIRs) was analyzed. As a result of the analysis, it is found that the geomagnetic field is continuously disturbed in the high-speed stream in question. The geomagnetic disturbances with long duration recurred several rotations between December 1993 and June 1994.

Magnetohydrodynamic Modeling of Background Solar Wind near Mars: Comparison with MAVEN and Tianwen-1

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal
Combined with data assimilation methods, a three-dimensional magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) numerical model is an effective tool to explore the mechanism of space weather.

Space weather impacts on the ionosphere over the southern African mid-latitude region

open access: yesEarth, Planets and Space, 2023
The ionosphere suffers major perturbations during severe space weather events such as Coronal Mass Ejections (CMEs), solar flares, high-speed streams, and Corotating Interaction Regions (CIRs).

Low Frequency Extensions of Cyclotron Maser Instability‐Generated Radio Emission: A Statistical View From Cassini at Saturn

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Space Physics, Volume 131, Issue 8, August 2026.
Abstract The Cassini spacecraft spent 13 years orbiting Saturn, quasi‐continuously measuring Saturn's radio emissions. One of the key elements of the radio spectrum at Saturn is the Saturn Kilometric Radiation (SKR), and several studies have been written on events called Low Frequency Extensions (LFEs) which represent strong, continuous extensions of ...

TRACERS Small‐Scale Field‐Aligned Currents and Intense GPS Amplitude and Phase Scintillations in the Nightside Auroral Region

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 53, Issue 14, 28 July 2026.
Abstract We present conjugate observations of ionospheric small‐scale magnetic perturbations (dB) $(dB)$ and GPS scintillations from the Tandem Reconnection and Cusp Electrodynamics Reconnaissance Satellites (TRACERS) and the Canadian High Arctic Ionospheric Network (CHAIN) during a storm‐time substorm on 9 August 2025 in the nightside auroral region ...
