Joule Heating in the Northern Hemisphere During Geomagnetic Storms Driven by High‐Speed Streams and Coronal Mass Ejections

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Space Physics, Volume 131, Issue 4, April 2026.
Abstract We present a robust method for estimating the auroral Joule heating in the northern hemisphere by combining SuperMAG, SuperDARN and AMPERE data products. This method is applied to 292 storms during 2010–2023. Temporal evolution and spatial distributions of the storm‐time Joule heating are studied using a superposed epoch analysis, with the ...

Modeling the Transport of Solar Energetic Particles in a Corotating Interaction Region

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal
We present a new three-dimensional (3D) magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) model and a new 3D energetic particle transport (EPT) model. The 3D MHD model numerically solves the ideal MHD equations using the relaxing total variation diminishing scheme.

Superposed Epoch Analysis of Extreme Geomagnetic Disturbances at Auroral Zone Latitudes Over a Solar Cycle

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Space Physics, Volume 131, Issue 4, April 2026.
Abstract Intense and rapidly changing electrical currents in near‐Earth space produce geomagnetic disturbances (GMDs) with large magnetic field rates of change (dB/dt) and in turn large geomagnetically induced currents (GICs) in nearby power lines and pipelines. This study builds on the work of Engebretson, Yang, et al.

Solar wind stream interfaces in corotating interaction regions: New SWICS/Ulysses results [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Space Physics, 1999
We have analyzed data from the solar wind ion composition spectrometer (SWICS)/Ulysses instrument taken between August 1996 and May 1997. In this period the Ulysses spacecraft traveled from 28° to 11° N and encountered a highly regular pattern of high‐speed streams alternating with slow solar wind.

Anisotropic Proton Heating by Kinetic Instabilities in Corotating Interaction Regions

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal
Corotating interaction regions (CIRs), formed by the interaction of fast and slow solar wind streams, are characterized by strong compression, enhanced turbulence, and elevated proton temperatures.

Influence of Inlet Temperature Differentials on Aerothermal Characteristics and Mass Flow Distribution in Multi-Inlet and Multi-Outlet Corotating-Disc Cavities

open access: yesEnergies
To facilitate the development of next-generation gas turbine cooling systems, the present study systematically investigates the influence of inlet temperature differentials on the aerothermal characteristics and mass flow distribution within multi-inlet,

Power spectral signatures of interplanetary corotating and transient flows [PDF]

open access: yes, 1984
Studies of the time behavior of the galactic cosmic ray intensity have concluded that long term decreases in the intensity are generally associated with systems of interplanetary flows that contain flare generated shock waves, magnetic clouds and other ...

Persistence of Solar Wind Velocity along Radial, Longitudinal, and Latitudinal Spacecraft Separation

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal
Recent missions, including the Parker Solar Probe, Solar Orbiter, and the Mars Atmosphere and Volatile EvolutioN (MAVEN), have probed a wide range of heliocentric distances, enabling new investigations of solar wind evolution.

The radial variation of corotating energetic particle streams in the inner and outer solar system [PDF]

open access: yes, 1977
The radial gradient of long-lived, corotating energetic particle streams was measured using observations of .9-2.2 MeV protons from Helios 1 and 2, IMP 7, Pioneer 10 and Pioneer 11.

Modeling Ion Acceleration and Transport in Corotating Interaction Regions: The Mass-to-charge Ratio Dependence of the Particle Spectrum

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal Letters
We investigate the role of perpendicular diffusion in shaping the energetic ion spectrum in corotating interaction regions (CIRs), focusing on its mass-to-charge ( A / Q ) ratio dependence.
