Pathogenicity of "Crithidia fasciculata" in the haemocoele of "Glossina"

The mosquito flagellate Crithidia fasciculata produces intense haemocoelic infections following intrahaemocoelic inoculation into 5 species of Glossina--G. austeni, G. fuscipes fuscipes, G. morsitans morsitans, G. palpalis gambiensis and G. tachinoides. All Glossina inoculated with C. fasciculata died between days 4 and 9.

Abstract 1. 1. Six sterols have been detected in Trypanosoma cruzi cultured on serum-free medium. Four of these are ergosterol, 22,23-dihydroergosterol, 7-dehydroporiferasterol and 7-dehydroclionasterol (or their C24 isomers from which they cannot be distinguished with the small quantities available).

Effects of Hydroxyurea on Crithidia fasciculata

SYNOPSIS Hydroxyurea (HU) inhibits increase in cell number in cultures of Crithidia fasciculata. Complete inhibition is produced by 8 mM and higher concentrations. If HU is not removed, population growth resumes in 45–50 h: if HU is removed, partially synchronous growth occurs through 2 cycles. During HU inhibition, the rate of DNA synthesis is reduced

The histone-like proteins of the monogenetic parasite Crithidia fasciculata were extracted with 0.2 M sulfuric acid either from purified nuclei, or from purified chromatin, in both cases in the presence of 1 mM tosyl lysylchloromethylketone and 2 mM phenyl methyl sulfonyl fluoride as proteinase inhibitors.

The origin of unconjugated pteridines in Crithidia fasciculata

By using folic acid-2-14C in the growth medium as the sole source of pteridine it was found that the kinetoplastid flagellate, Crithidia fasciculata, produced a total of 87 mμg of labeled biopterin and 23 μg of 2-amino-4-hydroxy-6-hydroxymethylpteridine from 2 mg of folic acid in 2 liters of medium.

In this work we describe the ability of living Crithidia deanei to hydrolyze extracellular ATP.
