Dynamic structure of the cytoplasm

open access: yes
The cytoplasm is a dense and complex milieu in which a plethora of biochemical reactions occur. Its structure is not understood so far, albeit being central to cellular functioning.

Cellular Hydraulics Suggests a Poroelastic Cytoplasm Rheology [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
The cytoplasm represents the largest part of the cell by volume and hence its rheology sets the rate at which cellular shape change can occur. Recent experimental evidence suggests that cytoplasmic rheology can be described using a poroelastic ...

Protein diffusion in mammalian cell cytoplasm.

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2011
We introduce a new method for mesoscopic modeling of protein diffusion in an entire cell. This method is based on the construction of a three-dimensional digital model cell from confocal microscopy data.

Heterozygous loss‐of‐function alleles associate the conserved 3′‐5′ exoribonuclease EXOSC10 with hypersensitivity to the anticancer drug 5‐fluorouracil

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
EXOSC10, an essential nuclear RNA exosome‐associated 3′‐5′ exoribonuclease, is inhibited by the anticancer drug 5‐fluorouracil (5‐FU), and EXOSC10 depletion increases 5‐FU sensitivity. The colon‐cancer variant EXOSC10S402T, located in a proteolysis motif, is stable and nuclear but nonfunctional in vivo.

Selection with Gene-Cytoplasm Interactions. II. Maintenance of Gynodioecy

open access: yes, 1985
Gynodioecy is apparently frequently inherited through gene-cytoplasm interactions. General conditions for the protectedness of gene-cytoplasm polymorphisms for a biallelic model with two cytoplasm types were obtained previously, and these are applied to ...

Competing E3 Ubiquitin Ligases Determine Circadian Period by Regulated Degradation of CRY in Nucleus and Cytoplasm

open access: yesCell, 2013
SUMMARY Period determination in the mammalian circadian clock involves the turnover rate of the repressors, CRY and PER. Here we show that CRY ubiquitination engages two competing E3 ligase complexes that either lengthen or shorten circadian period in ...

Interaction of HS1BP3 with cortactin modulates TKS5 localisation, cell secretion and cancer malignancy

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Here, we demonstrate that HS1BP3 interacts with Cortactin through a proline‐rich region (PRR3.1) and show that this interaction, and HS1BP3 itself, promote cancer cell proliferation and invasion. Inhibition of this interaction leads to build‐up of TKS5 in multivesicular endosomes and altered secretion of CD63 and CD9, providing an explanation for the ...

Differential and interactive effects of cytoplasmic substitution and seed ageing on submergence stress response in wheat (Triticum aestivum L.)

open access: yesBiotechnology & Biotechnological Equipment, 2019
Cytoplasmic genomes affect various phenotypes, including abiotic stress responses, through interaction with nuclear genomes in plants. We focused on the effects of cytoplasmic substitution on germination and seedling growth in combinations with ...

Diffusion, Crowding & Protein Stability in a Dynamic Molecular Model of the Bacterial Cytoplasm

open access: yesPLoS Comput. Biol., 2010
A longstanding question in molecular biology is the extent to which the behavior of macromolecules observed in vitro accurately reflects their behavior in vivo.
