Mapping the evolution of mitochondrial complex I through structural variation

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Respiratory complex I (CI) is crucial for bioenergetic metabolism in many prokaryotes and eukaryotes. It is composed of a conserved set of core subunits and additional accessory subunits that vary depending on the organism. Here, we categorize CI subunits from available structures to map the evolution of CI across eukaryotes. Respiratory complex I (CI)

Reciprocal control of viral infection and phosphoinositide dynamics

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Phosphoinositides, although scarce, regulate key cellular processes, including membrane dynamics and signaling. Viruses exploit these lipids to support their entry, replication, assembly, and egress. The central role of phosphoinositides in infection highlights phosphoinositide metabolism as a promising antiviral target.

Prediction of the effect of bike-sharing on urban carbon emission reduction: Evidence from Beijing

open access: yesJournal of Urban Management
Bike-sharing is regarded as a green and economical public transport mode. However, how to scientifically predict its carbon emission reduction effect is still on the way. This article builds an assessment model for emission reduction of bike-sharing. The

Measuring Governance Using Cross-Country Perceptions Data [PDF]

open access: yes
This paper describes an ongoing project to measure governance using crosscountry perceptions data. The governance indicators measure six dimensions of governance and cover 209 countries and territories for 1996-2004.

By dawn or dusk—how circadian timing rewrites bacterial infection outcomes

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The circadian clock shapes immune function, yet its influence on infection outcomes is only beginning to be understood. This review highlights how circadian timing alters host responses to the bacterial pathogens Salmonella enterica, Listeria monocytogenes, and Streptococcus pneumoniae revealing that the effectiveness of immune defense depends not only

Phosphatidylinositol 4‐kinase as a target of pathogens—friend or foe?

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This graphical summary illustrates the roles of phosphatidylinositol 4‐kinases (PI4Ks). PI4Ks regulate key cellular processes and can be hijacked by pathogens, such as viruses, bacteria and parasites, to support their intracellular replication. Their dual role as essential host enzymes and pathogen cofactors makes them promising drug targets.

Government matters III : governance indicators for 1996-2002 [PDF]

open access: yes
The authors present estimates of six dimensions of governance covering 199 countries and territories for four time periods: 1996, 1998, 2000, and 2002. These indicators are based on several hundred individual variables measuring perceptions of governance,

The role and implications of mammalian cellular circadian entrainment

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
At their most fundamental level, mammalian circadian rhythms occur inside every individual cell. To tell the correct time, cells must align (or ‘entrain’) their circadian rhythm to the external environment. In this review, we highlight how cells entrain to the major circadian cues of light, feeding and temperature, and the implications this has for our

Aquaculture Ponds Identification Based on Multi-Feature Combination Strategy and Machine Learning from Landsat-5/8 in a Typical Inland Lake of China

open access: yesRemote Sensing
Inland aquaculture ponds, as an important land use type, have brought great economic benefits to local people but at the same time have caused many environmental problems threatening regional ecology security.
