Effects of mechanical strain on thermal denaturation of DNA

open access: yes, 2001
As sections of a strand duplexed DNA denature when exposed to high temperature, the excess linking number is taken up by the undenatured portions of the molecule.

Formation of Stable Amorphous Calcium Phosphate and Collagen Assemblies by a Versatile Spray‐Drying Approach

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Amorphous calcium phosphate (ACP) microparticles with long‐term and thermal stability are prepared with or without collagen using a scalable one‐pot spray‐drying process. Under simulated physiological conditions, they crystallize into biomimetic bone mineral and, when combined with collagen, form extrudable, fibrillar bone‐like 3D constructs.

Temperature and state-dependent electrical conductivity of soft biological tissue at hyperthermic temperatures

open access: yesInternational Journal of Hyperthermia
Objective: We present a physics-based, temperature and state-dependent electrical conductivity model for soft biological tissue under thermal therapies with a quantified damage parameter that represents the state of soft biological tissue (degree of ...

Strategies for Loading and Releasing Peptide Therapeutics in Biodegradable Carriers

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A biodegradable carrier‐based peptide delivery system is a powerful treatment platform for diverse diseases, owing to its superior therapeutic efficacy and low toxicity. This review examines the conventional peptide‐loaded carrier fabrication process and its current limitations.

Physical and functional characterization of whey protein-lignin biocomposite films for food packaging applications

open access: yesFuture Foods
Whey protein isolate (WPI) and lignin are by-products of the cheese production and pulp and paper industries, respectively. The objective of this work was to analyze the physicochemical and mechanical properties of biodegradable films made from WPI (at ...

Cooperative Unfolding of Residual Structure in Heat Denatured Proteins by Urea and Guanidinium Chloride. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2015
The denatured states of proteins have always attracted our attention due to the fact that the denatured state is the only experimentally achievable state of a protein, which can be taken as initial reference state for considering the in vitro folding and

Roles of stiffness and excluded volume in DNA denaturation

open access: yes, 2002
The nature and the universal properties of DNA thermal denaturation are investigated by Monte Carlo simulations. For suitable lattice models we determine the exponent c describing the decay of the probability distribution of denaturated loops of length l,

Multiplex Modular Nanorobotic Systems with Catalytic Activity under Magnetic Navigation

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
We present modular nanorobots composed of a magnetic propulsion module and different extension modules carrying functional activities, assembled via DNA base pairing. The system integrates propulsion, optical tracking, enzymatic catalysis, and cell docking in a programmable manner.

Statistical Mechanics of thermal denaturation of DNA oligomers [PDF]

open access: yes, 2003
Double stranded DNA chain is known to have nontrivial elasticity. We study the effect of this elasticity on the denaturation profile of DNA oligomer by constraining one base pair at one end of the oligomer to remain in unstretched (or intact) state.

Co‐Electrospinning Extracellular Matrix with Polycaprolactone Enables a Modular Approach to Balance Bioactivity and Mechanics of a Multifunctional Bone Wrap

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
The incorporation of nondigested ECM and synthetic polymers into a co‐electrospinning system enables the decoupling of bioactivity and mechanical properties within a single wrap. This technique is used to develop a multifunctional bone wrap that achieves augmented membrane durability, sustained infection control, and enhanced vascularity for use in ...
