Biosynthesis of Depsides, Depsidones, and Diphenyl Ethers from Fungi and Lichens

open access: yesAsian Journal of Organic Chemistry, Volume 14, Issue 2, February 2025.
Depsides are natural products derived from (poly)phenolic acid derivatives connected by ester bonds. Recent research has revealed crucial molecular mechanisms and distinctive enzymatic chemistry underlying the biosynthesis of depsides, as well as related natural products, such as depsidones and diphenyl ethers.

The role of lichenized algae in the production of Cladonia verticillaris depsidones, revealed by using alginate-immobilized cells [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
The mycobiont of the lichen Cladonia verticillaris produces two depsidones, protocetraric and fumarprotocetraric acids, in the nature. This last compound is produced from the former depsidone.

A Novel b-Orcinol Depsidone of Lichen Lobaria pulmonaria [PDF]

open access: yesAsian Journal of Chemistry, 2014
In continuation of our phytochemical survey of Lobaria pulmonaria has led to the identification of deoxystictic acid in this foliose lichen species for the first time. The isolated β-orcinol depsidone showed moderate anti-hydroxyl radical activity using fluorescence spectroscopy at in vitro conditions.

Authentication of Iceland Moss (Cetraria islandica) by UPLC-QToF-MS chemical profiling and DNA barcoding [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
The lichen Cetraria islandica or Iceland Moss is commonly consumed as tea, food ingredients (e.g. in soup or bread) and herbal medicines. C. islandica, which has two chemotypes, can be difficult to distinguish from the sister species Cetraria ericetorum.
