Reticulocytosis in Response to Dietary Antioxidants
Science, 1969Alpha-tocopheryl acetate, 1, 2, dihydro-6-ethoxy-2, 2, 4-trimethylquinoline, and butylated hydroxytoluene increased the number of circulating reticulocytes when added to the diet of chickens. Hematocrit values were not reduced and erythrocyte life-spans were not shortened by the antioxidants.

Antioxidant activity of dietary canthaxanthin
Nutrition and Cancer, 1989It has been suggested that canthaxanthin (CX), beta-carotene, and other carotenoids may inhibit carcinogenesis via antioxidant activity. CX has been shown to inhibit lipid peroxidation in liposomes; this experiment was designed to assess the antioxidant activity of CX in biological membranes. Chicks were fed semipurified diets supplemented with placebo

Dietary antioxidants and glucose metabolism
Current Opinion in Clinical Nutrition and Metabolic Care, 2008Oxidative stress seems to play a pathogenic role in the vicious circle linking obesity, insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes. Hypothetically, dietary antioxidants should decrease oxidative stress and therefore improve glucose metabolism. However, many interventional trials evaluating the effect of antioxidant supplementation on insulin resistance ...

Dietary Antioxidants and Cardiovascular Disease
Annals of the New York Academy of Sciences, 1992Publisher Summary This chapter summarizes the basic science behind the hypothesis that antioxidants that might prevent cardiovascular disease (CVD). It reviews the observational epidemiology that relates to this hypothesis, and discusses the results of randomized trials examining primary and secondary prevention of CVD through dietary supplementation.

Dietary Flavonoids as Antioxidants
2009Flavonoids are ubiquitously present in fruits and vegetables. They have attracted much attention in relation to prevention of degenerative diseases such as atherosclerosis. Their antioxidant activity should be at least partly responsible for such prevention.

Dietary antioxidants and adult asthma
Current Opinion in Allergy and Clinical Immunology, 2001The triggers and causes of asthma have long been topics of investigation by epidemiologists. The current concept of asthma and atopy is that the onset of the disease and its clinical course are determined by gene environment interactions; that is, those individuals who develop asthma are both genetically susceptible and receive appropriate ...

Oxidative stress, an imbalance between oxidants and antioxidants, is a key factor in chronic inflammation and metabolic diseases. High-fat or carbohydrate-rich diets exacerbate oxidative stress, increasing protein carbonylation and lipid peroxidation, while reducing antioxidant defenses. This chronic condition is linked to insulin resistance, metabolic

Dietary Antioxidant Compounds and Liver Health
Critical Reviews in Food Science and Nutrition, 2004Chronic liver damage is a widespread pathology characterized by a progressive evolution from steatosis to chronic hepatitis, fibrosis, cirrhosis, and hepatocellular carcinoma. As the oxidative stress plays a central role in liver diseases pathogenesis and progression, the use of antioxidants have been proposed as therapeutic agents, as well as drug ...

Dietary antioxidants and cardiovascular disease
Current Opinion in Lipidology, 2005Oxidative damage is involved in cardiovascular diseases. Intervention with alpha-tocopherol, ascorbic acid and beta-carotene does not appear to reduce pathogenesis. The purpose of this review is to describe alternative antioxidant mechanisms that may be involved.Antioxidants with different chemical properties may recharge each other in an antioxidant ...
