A comparison of human skeletal muscle cell maturation in 2D versus 3D culture: A quantitative proteomic study. [PDF]

open access: yesPhysiol Rep
Abstract Compared with 2D monolayers, 3D models more closely mimic native muscle tissue and allow functional measurements. A more complete understanding of how culture conditions and duration affect myotube maturity/function is crucial for validating the transition to 3D systems.

Vitamin D3 suppresses the cholesterol homeostasis pathway in patient‐derived glioma cell lines

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, Volume 13, Issue 9, Page 1789-1806, September 2023., 2023
Vitamin D3 exerts a significantly stronger inhibitory effect on cell viability and cell proliferation of patient‐derived glioma cell lines than calcitriol, and this effect is mediated through inhibition of cholesterol homeostasis and cholesterol synthesis. Glioblastoma is one of the most common malignant brain tumors.

Disturbances of brain cholesterol metabolism: A new excitotoxic process associated with status epilepticus

open access: yesNeurobiology of Disease, 2021
The understanding of the excitotoxic processes associated with a severe status epilepticus (SE) is of major importance.Changes of brain cholesterol homeostasis is an emerging candidate for excitotoxicity.

Dysregulated cholesterol metabolism, aberrant excitability and altered cell cycle of astrocytes in fragile X syndrome

open access: yesGlia, Volume 71, Issue 5, Page 1176-1196, May 2023., 2023
Main Points Astrocytes derived from FXS patient hiPSC display shortened cell cycle and enhanced calcium signaling. Pervasively altered proteome identifies impaired cholesterol biosynthesis. The study highlights astrocytes as a novel therapeutic target for FXS treatment.

Oxygen-Mediated Regulation of Cholesterol Synthesis Through Accelerated Degradation of HMG COA Reductase [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
Endoplasmic reticulum-associated degradation of the enzyme 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl CoA reductase represents one mechanism by which cholesterol synthesis is controlled in mammalian cells.

Pathway‐based integration of multi‐omics data reveals lipidomics alterations validated in an Alzheimer's disease mouse model and risk loci carriers

open access: yesJournal of Neurochemistry, Volume 164, Issue 1, Page 57-76, January 2023., 2023
A genome‐scale model network was built for Alzheimer's disease (AD) using data from publicly available genome‐wide association studies in humans, and transcriptomics and proteomics data from brain tissue from mouse models of AD. The derived network was characterized by gene ontology, transcription factor analysis, and pathway and cell‐type enrichment ...

Sterol Biosynthesis in Four Green Algae: A Bioinformatic Analysis of the Ergosterol Versus Phytosterol Decision Point

open access: yesJournal of Phycology, Volume 57, Issue 4, Page 1199-1211, August 2021., 2021
Animals and fungi produce cholesterol and ergosterol, respectively, while plants produce the phytosterols stigmasterol, campesterol, and β‐sitosterol in various combinations. The recent sequencing of many algal genomes allows the detailed reconstruction of the sterol metabolic pathways. Here, we characterized sterol synthesis in two sequenced Chlorella

Deciphering the initial products of coal during methanogenic bioconversion: Based on an untargeted metabolomics approach

open access: yesGCB Bioenergy, Volume 13, Issue 6, Page 967-978, June 2021., 2021
In this study, five coal‐degrading bacterial strains were isolated and identified from a microbial community refers to methanogenic coal bioconversion and used to degrade coal substrate. Authors used metabolomic analysis showing that a large number of alkane compounds and heterocyclic aromatic compounds were obtained after degradation of bituminous ...

Hyperlipidemia May Synergize with Hypomethylation in Establishing Trained Immunity and Promoting Inflammation in NASH and NAFLD

open access: yesJournal of Immunology Research, Volume 2021, Issue 1, 2021., 2021
We performed a panoramic analysis on both human nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) microarray data and microarray/RNA‐seq data from various mouse models of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease NASH/NAFLD with total 4249 genes examined and made the following findings: (i) human NASH and NAFLD mouse models upregulate both cytokines and chemokines; (ii ...

Phytomedicine from Middle Eastern Countries: An Alternative Remedy to Modern Medicine against Candida spp Infection

open access: yesEvidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine, Volume 2021, Issue 1, 2021., 2021
Candida spp are capable of infecting both normal and immunocompromised individuals. More recently, Candida infections have spread considerably in healthcare settings, especially in intensive care units, where it is the most frequently encountered pathogen.
