24‐Dehydrocholesterol reductase promotes the growth of breast cancer stem‐like cells through the Hedgehog pathway

open access: yesCancer Science, Volume 111, Issue 10, Page 3653-3664, October 2020., 2020
Cholesterol is a risk factor for breast cancer. Our study uncovers that 24‐dehydrocholesterol reductase (DHCR24), a key enzyme in the cholesterol synthesis pathway, promotes the growth of cancer stem‐like cell populations by enhancing the Hedgehog signaling pathway in ER+ and HER2+ breast cancer.

Sterols of skin in the normal and triparanol-treated rat

open access: yesJournal of Lipid Research, 1963
Skin of normal rats and of rats treated with triparanol were incubated with acetate-2-H3 for 2 hr, and the sterols were extracted and separated chromatographically.

Male germ cell-specific knockout of cholesterogenic cytochrome P450 lanosterol 14α-demethylase (Cyp51)

open access: yesJournal of Lipid Research, 2013
Cytochrome P450 lanosterol 14α-demethylase (CYP51) and its products, meiosis-activating sterols (MASs), were hypothesized by previous in vitro studies to have an important role in regulating meiosis and reproduction.

Endogenous sterol intermediates of the mevalonate pathway regulate HMGCR degradation and SREBP-2 processing[S]

open access: yesJournal of Lipid Research, 2019
Sterol-regulated HMG-CoA reductase (HMGCR) degradation and SREBP-2 cleavage are two major feedback regulatory mechanisms governing cholesterol biosynthesis.

Preparation and properties of a cell-free system from rat skin that catalyzes sterol biosynthesis

open access: yesJournal of Lipid Research, 1966
Homogenates of epidermis from rat skin were centrifuged at 10,000 · g for 20 min. The supernatant fraction (“whole homogenate”) catalyzed the demethylation of lanosterol (C30) to yield C27-sterols. The rate of reaction was measured by the rate of release

The identification of 24-methylene-24,25-dihydrolanosterol and other possible ergosterol precursors in Phycomyces blakesleeanus and Agaricus campestris [PDF]

open access: yesPhytochemistry, 1975
Abstract The following sterols have been isolated from the fungi, Phycomyces blakesleeanus and Agaricus campestris : ergosterol, lanosterol, 24-methylene-24,25-dihydrolanosterol and episterol. 4,4-Dimethyl-5α-ergosta-8.24(28)-dien-3β-ol and 4α-methyl-5α-ergosta-8,24(28)-dien-3β-ol have been tentatively identified. Evidence for the incorporation of

A Novel Function for 15-Lipoxygenases in Cholesterol Homeostasis and CCL17 Production in Human Macrophages

open access: yesFrontiers in Immunology, 2018
Arachidonate 15-lipoxygenase (ALOX15) and arachidonate 15-lipoxygenase, type B (ALOX15B) catalyze the dioxygenation of polyunsaturated fatty acids and are upregulated in human alternatively activated macrophages (AAMs) induced by Th2 cytokine interleukin-

The origin of fetal sterols in second-trimester amniotic fluid: endogenous synthesis or maternal-fetal transport? [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
OBJECTIVE: Cholesterol is crucial for fetal development. To gain more insight into the origin of the fetal cholesterol pool in early human pregnancy, we determined cholesterol and its precursors in the amniotic fluid of uncomplicated, singleton human ...

Analytical Study of Lanolin as Potential Biomarker of Prehistoric Sheep‐Shearing Practice

open access: yesChemistry–Methods, Volume 5, Issue 8, August 2025.
Lanolin, a complex wax found on sheep wool, accumulates on shearing tools, such as flint and obsidian blades, used since the Neolithic. This study explores lanolin's degradation patterns as a potential biomarker for prehistoric sheep‐shearing practices, employing micro‐Fourier transformed infrared spectroscopy, hyperspectral imaging, and gas ...
