Biosynthesis of diosgenin in Dioscorea tubers
Archives of Biochemistry and Biophysics, 1961Abstract The incorporation of radioacetate into diosgenin by homogenates of Dioscorea floribunda has been demonstrated by rigorous purification of the isolated sapogenin. Mevalonic acid is not incorporated into diosgenin to any significant extent under these conditions.

Diosgenin saponins from Dioscorea floribunda
Phytochemistry, 1975Abstract Five spirostanol glycosides and two furostanol glycosides were isolated from Dioscorea floribunda . In addition to the IR spectra of the free glycosides and the MS of the peracetates and permethyl ethers, the most effective method for structural determination proved to be the NMR spectra of the free saponins in pyridine- d 5 .

Cardiovascular Effect of Diosgenin in Ovariectomized Rats
Journal of Medicinal Food, 2019Diosgenin is a phytoestrogen and a constituent of Dioscorea. It has several biological effects, and some of them are anti-inflammatory, antidiabetic, antitumor, and vasodilatory. The present study investigated both the vasorelaxing and antioxidant mechanisms of diosgenin in isolated rat aortic rings.

Novel effects of diosgenin on skin aging
Steroids, 2009Extracts of Dioscorea coomposita or Dioscorea villosa are consumed as supplemental health foods at the time of climacteric. The extracts contain large amounts of the plant steroid, diosgenin. Here, we studied the safety and efficacy of diosgenin against skin aging at the time of climacteric. In vitro, diosgenin enhanced DNA synthesis in a human 3D skin

Diosgenin: Therapeutic Action, Pharmacology and Applications
Science & Technology Journal, 2017Diosgenin [25R-spriost-5-en-3þ-ol], is an important steroidal metabolite found in various plant species. The discovery of diosgenin has made it one of the most researched and studied herbal product. Moreover, there is excellent opportunity to address whether diosgenin plays a role in chemoprevention versus therapy, or both.

Solubility of diosgenin in different solvents
The Journal of Chemical Thermodynamics, 2012Abstract The solubility of diosgenin in methanol, ethanol (95%), isopropanol, acetone, acetic ether, and propyl acetate were measured at temperatures from (295.15 to 330.15) K using the synthetic method by a laser monitoring observation technique at atmospheric pressure.

Reactions of diosgenin a sterol isolated from an extract of Dioscorea tokoro are discussed. Diosgenin is known to possess a 56 double bond and 1 nuclear hydroxyl group in the 3-position with the beta configuration appearing as in cholesterol. The compound was subjected to reactions applied to sarsasapogenin and other steroidal sapogenins for the ...

Chemodifferentiation of diosgenin in Dioscorea composita
Phytochemistry, 1984Abstract Diosgenin was isolated from different parts of a three-year-old plant of Dioscorea composite . The amounts (% on a dry wt basis) present were: tubers, 3.6; vine internodes and nodes with their leaves from first 20 nodes from the tubers, 1.6; similarly from intermediate 20 nodes, 0.039 and from upper 20 nodes, 0.03.
