Quantum information in the Posner model of quantum cognition [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
Matthew Fisher recently postulated a mechanism by which quantum phenomena could influence cognition: Phosphorus nuclear spins may resist decoherence for long times, especially when in Posner molecules. The spins would serve as biological qubits.

Emulsifiers in ultra-processed foods in the UK food supply

open access: yesPublic Health Nutrition, 2023
Objective: Ultra-processed foods (UPF), including those containing food additive emulsifiers, have received research attention due to evidence implicating them in the pathogenesis of certain diseases.

Molecular basis for the plasticity of aromatic prenyltransferases in hapalindole biosynthesis

open access: yesBeilstein Journal of Organic Chemistry, 2019
Aromatic prenyltransferases (PTases) are enzymes that catalyze Friedel–Crafts reactions between aromatic compounds and isoprenoid diphosphates. In hapalindole biosynthesis, the aromatic PTases AmbP1 and AmbP3 exhibit surprisingly plastic selectivities ...

AZT exerts its antitumoral effect by telomeric and non-telomeric effects in a mammary adenocarcinoma model [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
Limitless replicative potential is one of the hallmarks of cancer that is mainly due to the activity of telomerase. This holoenzyme maintains telomere length, adding TTAGGG repetitions at the end of chromosomes in each cell division.

Transcriptome analysis of bitter acid biosynthesis and precursor pathways in hop (Humulus lupulus)

open access: yesBMC Plant Biology, 2013
Background Bitter acids (e.g. humulone) are prenylated polyketides synthesized in lupulin glands of the hop plant (Humulus lupulus) which are important contributors to the bitter flavour and stability of beer.

Toxicity test of a dental commercial composite [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Background: International rules must be followed for testing biosecurity in dental materials. A new brand of restorative material appeared in the market and regulations indicated that it should be tested for toxicity.

Guanosine 5‘-diphosphate-3‘-diphosphate inhibition of adenylosuccinate synthetase.

open access: yesJournal of Biological Chemistry, 1979
The mechanism of ppGpp inhibition of adenylosuccinate synthetase (EC 6.3.4.4) was examined. Initial rate kinetic studies demonstrate the ppGpp inhibition is competitive with respect to GTP and noncompetitive with respect to L-aspartate and IMP. This is in contrast to an earlier report (Gallant, J., Irr, J., and Cashel, M. (1971) J. Biol. Chem.

Protein pyrophosphorylation by inositol pyrophosphates — detection, function, and regulation

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Protein pyrophosphorylation is an unusual signaling mechanism that was discovered two decades ago. It can be driven by inositol pyrophosphate messengers and influences various cellular processes. Herein, we summarize the research progress and challenges of this field, covering pathways found to be regulated by this posttranslational modification as ...

Golgi-located NTPDase1 of Leishmania major is required for lipophosphoglycan elongation and normal lesion development whereas secreted NTPDase2 is dispensable for virulence. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS Neglected Tropical Diseases, 2014
Parasitic protozoa, such as Leishmania species, are thought to express a number of surface and secreted nucleoside triphosphate diphosphohydrolases (NTPDases) which hydrolyze a broad range of nucleoside tri- and diphosphates.

An integrated approach to evaluate acetamiprid-induced oxidative damage to tRNA in human cells based on oxidized nucleotide and tRNA profiling

open access: yesEnvironment International, 2023
Acetamiprid is poisonous to mammals due to severe acetamiprid-induced oxidative stress that could cause mitochondrial dysfunctions, lipid and protein oxidation, inflammation, apoptosis, and DNA damage.
