Blue Supergiants and the Zero-point of the Tully–Fisher Relation: A Path to a New Independent Test of the Hubble Constant

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal
Blue supergiant distances of nearby galaxies obtained with the flux-weighted gravity–luminosity relationship are used for a measurement of the zero-points of Tully–Fisher relationships at different photometric passbands.

Supernovae as Distance Indicators

open access: yes, 2020
A brief review of the uncertainties affecting type Ia supernova measurements. An expose for future use of type II supernovae is given as well.

Cell‐cycle‐specific lesion evolution rather than inhibition of double‐strand‐break repair underpins cisplatin radiosensitization

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
We analyze cisplatin–DNA adducts (CDAs) and double‐strand breaks (DSBs) in a cell‐cycle‐dependent manner. We find that CDAs form similarly across all cell cycle phases. DSBs arise only in S‐phase. CDAs might not directly impair DSB repair, but S‐phase DSB lesions evolve in the presence of CDAs and disrupt repair in G2, also causing radiosensitization ...

Period–Luminosity–Metallicity–Color Relations of Late-type Contact Binaries in the Big Data Era

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal
Binary stars ubiquitous throughout the Universe are important. Contact binaries (CBs) possessing period–luminosity (PL) relations could be adopted as distance tracers. The PL relations of CBs are influenced by metallicity abundance and color index, which

Hijacking emergency granulopoiesis: Neutrophil ontogeny and reprogramming in cancer

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Neutrophils are highly plastic innate immune cells; their functions in cancer extend beyond the tumour microenvironment. This Review summarises current understanding of neutrophil maturation and heterogeneity and highlights tumour‐induced granulopoiesis as a systemic programme that expands immature, immunosuppressive neutrophils via tumour‐derived ...

The impact of background and context on car distance estimation

open access: yes, 2014
It is well established that people underestimate the distance to objects depicted in virtual environments and two-dimensional (2D) displays. The reasons for the underestimation are still not fully understood.

Near Miss Detection Using Distancing Monitoring and Distance-Based Proximal Indicators

open access: yesIEEE Access
Despite efforts to improve road safety, accidents persist due to insufficient evidence from manual police reporting, non-optimized detection algorithms, and technical limitations in real-time video processing and modelling.

Linguistic Distances and Ethnolinguistic Fractionalization and Disenfranchisement Indices [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
Ruhlen (1994) reconstructed 27 words of the very first language. Some linguists raised eyebrows about the words themselves, but not so much about the idea that all our languages descend from one, or a very small number of, language(s).1 Today, most linguists think that the diversity of languages is the result of the migration ‘out of Africa’ of Homo ...

ESR1 methylation and ESR1 mutations in circulating tumor cells (CTCs) and paired plasma‐cfDNA of advanced breast cancer patients: A feasibility proof‐of‐concept study

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Circulating tumor cells (CTCs) and plasma cell‐free DNA (cfDNA) were analyzed to detect ESR1 mutations and methylation in patients with advanced breast cancer. CTC‐derived DNA showed higher sensitivity for mutation detection and revealed complementary genetic and epigenetic alterations, highlighting the added value of CTC analysis for understanding ...

Aggregation of ecological indicators for mapping aquatic nature quality : overview of existing methods and case studies

open access: yes, 2010
Indicators for aquatic nature quality are calculated using ecological monitoring data from individual sampling stations. For reporting purposes, these results need to be aggregated and scaled up to higher levels (catchment area, country).
