To meet the high cellular demand for ribosomes, all eukaryotes have numerous copies of ribosomal DNA (rDNA) genes that encode ribosomal RNA (rRNA), usually far in excess of the requirement for ribosome biogenesis.

Chromosoma, 1977The replication of extrachromosomal rDNA molecules from the macronucleus of Tetrahymena was studied by electron microscopy. Replication begins in the center of the palindromic molecule and proceeds by means of bidirectional fork movement toward the free ends of the molecule.

Chromosoma, 1997We have sequenced and analyzed 8.3 kb of sequence adjacent and distal to the human ribosomal DNA (rDNA); this distal sequence connects to the rDNA cluster just 4 kb upstream of the first promoter and is shared among the acrocentric chromosomes and, at least in part, it is also present in other primates.

Heterogeneity in Chinese hamster ribosomal DNA
Chromosoma, 1978A discrete heterogeneity has been detected in Chinese hamster ribosomal DNA after Eco R1 digestion of total DNA followed by a Southern transfer and hybridization with [125I]18S or [125I]28S ribosomal RNA. Digestion with Eco R1 produces three fragments, 4.3, 6.0 and 9.5 x 10(6) daltons respectively, which hybridize with 18S RNA.
