From junk to function — How weak selection in eukaryotes builds new parts and drives genomic complexity

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
How do genomes gain new functional parts? In eukaryotes, which tend to evolve under weak selection, much of the genome is junk. Palazzo and Qiu borrow the logic of Markov chains to show how non‐functional DNA becomes functional through the appearance of intermediate states, which arise due to epistasis, buffering, and biochemical messiness, allowing ...

Dust-obscured star-forming galaxies in the early universe

open access: yes, 2017
Motivated by recent observational constraints on dust reprocessed emission in star-forming galaxies at z ~ 6 and above, we use the very large cosmological hydrodynamical simulation BLUETIDES to explore predictions for the amount of dust-obscured star ...

A context‐dependent modulatory role for eIF6 in acquired resistance to vemurafenib in melanoma

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Acquired resistance to vemurafenib upregulates the translation factor eIF6 in melanoma cells. Silencing eIF6 in resistant cells reduces proliferation and partially restores drug sensitivity, whereas its overexpression increases sensitivity across melanoma lines regardless of BRAF status, via modulation of mTOR, S6K, and MAPK signaling.

Measuring the star formation rate density from CNOC2 [PDF]

open access: yes, 2006
This thesis charts the evolution of the Universal Star Formation Rate Density (SFRD) across the redshift range 0.2 < z < 0.6, using the 2nd Canadian Network for Observational Cosmology Survey (CN0C2).

Dust properties and star formation of approximately a thousand local galaxies

open access: yes, 2019
International audienceAims. We derived the dust properties for 753 local galaxies and examine how these relate to some of their physical properties.

Dust particles influence on a stratified glow discharge

open access: yesPhysical Sciences and Technology, 2020
In this work, the correlations between the parameters of a DC glow discharge and dust particles in a lowtemperatureplasma is studied. The formation of voids inside the dust cloud was studied, depending on thecharacteristics of the discharge (discharge ...

On the formation of definite figures by the deposition of dust [PDF]

open access: yesProceedings of the Royal Society of London, 1903
Abstract The author shows that when a plate of glass or other material is slightly warmed and allowed to cool for 6 or 7 minutes in a dust-laden atmosphere, a clear and definite figure is formed on the plate. The figure is determined by the form of the plate on which it is deposited.

Tumour–host interactions in Drosophila: mechanisms in the tumour micro‐ and macroenvironment

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
This review examines how tumour–host crosstalk takes place at multiple levels of biological organisation, from local cell competition and immune crosstalk to organism‐wide metabolic and physiological collapse. Here, we integrate findings from Drosophila melanogaster studies that reveal conserved mechanisms through which tumours hijack host systems to ...

Major factors influencing local dust radiative forcing [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
In conclusion, it is shown in this paper that surface albedo variations over desert regions can have a significant influence on the solar and net radiative forcing of desert dust.

Dust Formation in C-Star Shells [PDF]

open access: yesSymposium - International Astronomical Union, 1987
The formation of carbon grains is described by a chemical pathway from acetylene via polyaromatic hydrogens (PAHs). The proposed mechanism is in excellent agreement with the observations and provides in particular the observed low condensation temperature which cannot be explained by classical nucleation theory.
