Perspectives in educating molecular pathologists on liquid biopsy: Toward integrative, equitable, and decentralized precision oncology

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Liquid biopsy enables minimally invasive, real‐time molecular profiling through analysis of circulating biomarkers in biological fluids. This Perspective highlights the importance of training pathologists through integrative educational programs, such as the European Masters in Molecular Pathology, to ensure effective and equitable implementation of ...

Inverse Modeling for MEG/EEG data

open access: yes, 2017
We provide an overview of the state-of-the-art for mathematical methods that are used to reconstruct brain activity from neurophysiological data. After a brief introduction on the mathematics of the forward problem, we discuss standard and recently ...

Next‐generation proteomics improves lung cancer risk prediction

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
This is one of very few studies that used prediagnostic blood samples from participants of two large population‐based cohorts. We identified, evaluated, and validated an innovative protein marker model that outperformed an established risk prediction model and criteria employed by low‐dose computed tomography in lung cancer screening trials.

Sliding mode control for a nonlinear phase-field system

open access: yes, 2017
In the present contribution the sliding mode control (SMC) problem for a phase-field model of Caginalp type is considered. First we prove the well-posedness and some regularity results for the phase-field type state systems modified by the state-feedback

Enhancing random forests performance in microarray data classification [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
Random forests are receiving increasing attention for classification of microarray datasets. We evaluate the effects of a feature selection process on the performance of a random forest classifier as well as on the choice of two critical parameters, i.e.

Developing evidence‐based, cost‐effective P4 cancer medicine for driving innovation in prevention, therapeutics, patient care and reducing healthcare inequalities

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
The cancer problem is increasing globally with projections up to the year 2050 showing unfavourable outcomes in terms of incidence and cancer‐related deaths. The main challenges are prevention, improved therapeutics resulting in increased cure rates and enhanced health‐related quality of life.

The mathematics of the tables of learning

open access: yesScience & Philosophy, 2015
The "learning tables" for mathematics are an interpretation of the National Guidelines for the Licei and the Guidelines for Technical and Professional Institutes which is consistent with their scientific and regulatory principles.

Sliding mode control for a phase field system related to tumor growth

open access: yes, 2017
In the present contribution we study the sliding mode control (SMC) problem for a diffuse interface tumor growth model coupling a viscous Cahn-Hilliard type equation for the phase variable with a reaction-diffusion equation for the nutrient.

Crucial parameters for precise copy number variation detection in formalin‐fixed paraffin‐embedded solid cancer samples

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
This study shows that copy number variations (CNVs) can be reliably detected in formalin‐fixed paraffin‐embedded (FFPE) solid cancer samples using ultra‐low‐pass whole‐genome sequencing, provided that key (pre)‐analytical parameters are optimized.
