Video1_P2X7 Purinoceptor Affects Ectopic Calcification of Dystrophic Muscles.AVI

open access: yes, 2022
Ectopic calcification (EC) of myofibers is a pathological feature of muscle damage in Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD). Mineralisation of muscle tissue occurs concomitantly with macrophage infiltration, suggesting a link between ectopic mineral ...

AGEs induce ectopic endochondral ossification in intervertebral discs [PDF]

open access: yesEuropean Cells & Materials, 2016
Ectopic calcifications in intervertebral discs (IVDs) are known characteristics of IVD degeneration that are not commonly reported but may be implicated in structural failure and dysfunctional IVD cell metabolic responses.

Surgical Excision of a Left Atrial Mobile Stalked Calcification Arising After Multiple Radiofrequency Ablations

open access: yesJACC: Case Reports, 2023
We report a rare case of a mobile ectopic calcification in the left atrium requiring surgical excision 9 years after multiple atrial fibrillation ablations. (Level of Difficulty: Intermediate.)

αKlotho Regulates Age-Associated Vascular Calcification and Lifespan in Zebrafish

open access: yesCell Reports, 2019
Summary: The hormone αKlotho regulates lifespan in mice, as knockouts die early of what appears to be accelerated aging due to hyperphosphatemia and soft tissue calcification. In contrast, the overexpression of αKlotho increases lifespan.

Tumour–host interactions in Drosophila: mechanisms in the tumour micro‐ and macroenvironment

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
This review examines how tumour–host crosstalk takes place at multiple levels of biological organisation, from local cell competition and immune crosstalk to organism‐wide metabolic and physiological collapse. Here, we integrate findings from Drosophila melanogaster studies that reveal conserved mechanisms through which tumours hijack host systems to ...

Matrix Gla protein negatively regulates calcification of human aortic valve interstitial cells isolated from calcified aortic valves

open access: yesJournal of Pharmacological Sciences, 2018
Calcified aortic valve stenosis (CAS) is a common heart valve disease in elderly people, and is mostly accompanied by ectopic valve calcification. We recently demonstrated that tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) induces calcification of human aortic valve ...

Oncogenic DMTF1β promotes cancer cell motility by regulating autophagy through ULK1 stabilization

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
In the current study, we demonstrate that the oncogene DMTF1β regulates ULK1 stability by reducing its proteasomal degradation in cancer cells. This stabilization enables ULK1 to induce autophagy, which in turn facilitates cancer cell migration. Consequently, reduced DMTF1β levels lead to decreased autophagy and impaired cancer cell migration.

1-Methyl-2-undecyl-4(1H)-quinolone, a derivative of quinolone alkaloid evocarpine, attenuates high phosphate-induced calcification of human aortic valve interstitial cells by inhibiting phosphate cotransporter PiT-1

open access: yesJournal of Pharmacological Sciences, 2016
An abnormally high serum phosphate level induces calcific aortic stenosis (CAS), which is characterized by ectopic valve calcification and stenosis of the orifice area.
