Ectopic mineralization in fibroblast cultures.

open access: yesArchivum histologicum japonicum, 1984
A human gingival fibroblast cell line was cultured in a DM-153 medium supplemented with 10% bovine serum. The cells in culture showed both intracellular and extracellular ectopic mineralization. Ultrastructurally, mineralization began within the round and irregularly shaped vesicles contained in large cytoplasmic vacuoles of fibroblasts.

Osteopontin Inhibits Mineral Deposition and Promotes Regression of Ectopic Calcification [PDF]

open access: yesThe American Journal of Pathology, 2002
Ectopic calcification, the abnormal calcification of soft tissues, can have severe clinical consequences especially when localized to vital organs such as heart valves, arteries, and kidneys. Recent observations suggest that ectopic calcification, like bone biomineralization, is an actively regulated process.

The Physiological and Pathological Role of Tissue Nonspecific Alkaline Phosphatase beyond Mineralization

open access: yesBiomolecules, 2021
Tissue-nonspecific alkaline phosphatase (TNAP) is a key enzyme responsible for skeletal tissue mineralization. It is involved in the dephosphorylation of various physiological substrates, and has vital physiological functions, including extra-skeletal ...

Plasma PPi Deficiency Is the Major, but Not the Exclusive, Cause of Ectopic Mineralization in an Abcc6-/- Mouse Model of PXE. [PDF]

open access: yesJ Invest Dermatol, 2017
Pseudoxanthoma elasticum (PXE), a prototype of heritable ectopic mineralization disorders, is caused in most cases by inactivating mutations in the ABCC6 gene.

Histomorphometry of ectopic mineralization using undecalcified frozen bone sections

open access: yesHistomorphometry of ectopic mineralization using undecalcified frozen bone sections
To investigate the correlation between mineral formation and enhanced expressions of some proteins using undecalcified frozen bone sections. Histological studies have revealed that some proteins, such as BMP2, BMPR1A, and Connexin 43, are expressed in and around sites of ectopic ossification.

Ectopic mineralization of cartilage and collagen-rich tendons and ligaments in Enpp1asj-2J mice. [PDF]

open access: yesOncotarget, 2016
Generalized arterial calcification of infancy (GACI), an autosomal recessive disorder caused by mutations in the ENPP1 gene, manifests with extensive mineralization of the cardiovascular system. A spontaneous asj-2J mutant mouse has been characterized as

Rare Co-occurrence of Beta-Thalassemia and Pseudoxanthoma elasticum: Novel Biomolecular Findings

open access: yesFrontiers in Medicine, 2020
A number of beta-thalassemia patients, independently from the type of beta-thalassemia (β0 or β+) and blood transfusion requirements, may develop, after puberty, dermal, cardiovascular, and ocular complications associated with an ectopic mineralization ...

Ectopic Mineralization of Hen Leg Tendon.

open access: yesJapanese Journal of Oral Biology, 2001

SMOC2 inhibits calcification of osteoprogenitor and endothelial cells. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2018
Tissue calcification is an important physiological process required for the normal structure and function of bone. However, ectopic or excessive calcification contributes to diseases such as chondrocalcinosis, to calcium deposits in the skin or to ...
