Subversion of Atypical Mucin Traps by a Spore‐Coat Effector Blocks Cellular Immunity in Drosophila

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
While the entomopathogenic fungus Metarhizium robertsii can evade insect humoral immunity, its subversion of cellular defenses is still elusive. We identify Eac1 as a spore‐coat protein essential for infecting drosophilids by targeting atypical mucins (Sgf1 and Sgf2), which can entrap spores in a gel matrix and thereby facilitate hemocyte encapsulation.

Effect of hen age, environmental temperature, and oviposition time on egg shell quality and egg shell and serum mineral contents in laying and broiler breeder hens

open access: yesCzech Journal of Animal Science, 2014
The aim of the study was to evaluate egg shell quality characteristics, mineral content in the egg shell, and serum mineral concentration during the egg formation process as influenced by oviposition time and ambient temperature at the beginning and end ...

Structural and mechanical changes in the egg membranes of Salmo gairdneri Rich. during the period of hatching of the larvae [PDF]

open access: yesActa Ichthyologica et Piscatoria, 1970
Structural and mechanical properties of the egg membranes of Salmo gairdneri Rich. in the period of hatching were investigated. Only local action of hatching enzyme upon the egg membrane and local decrease of its strength was observed.

Tuning Local Modulus at Liquid Metal‐Polymer Interfaces Regulates Electrocaloric Effect in Ferroelectric Nanocomposites

open access: yesAdvanced Electronic Materials, EarlyView.
Liquid metal nanoparticles create mechanically compliant polymer interfaces that facilitate reversible dipolar reorientation under electric fields, whereas rigid interfaces impose stronger local constraints. This soft–rigid interface comparison reveals local interfacial modulus as a key parameter for tuning electrocaloric entropy change in ...

Interpretability and Representability of Commutative Algebra, Algebraic Topology, and Topological Spectral Theory for Real‐World Data

open access: yesAdvanced Intelligent Discovery, EarlyView.
This article investigates how persistent homology, persistent Laplacians, and persistent commutative algebra reveal complementary geometric, topological, and algebraic invariants or signatures of real‐world data. By analyzing shapes, synthetic complexes, fullerenes, and biomolecules, the article shows how these mathematical frameworks enhance ...

Stochastic Locomotion Emerging From Body–Environment Interactions in a Mexican Jumping Bean–Inspired Robot

open access: yesAdvanced Intelligent Systems, EarlyView.
Inspired by the Mexican jumping bean, this study presents a centimeter‐scale, electronics‐free robot that merges principles from both the animal and plant kingdoms. A thermo‐responsive actuator mimicking larval motion, enclosed within a uniquely shaped plant‐seed‐inspired shell, generates jumping, rolling, flipping, sliding, and climbing through ...
