Interactions of Carbohydrate Intake and Physical Activity with Regulatory Genes Affecting Glycaemia: A Food4Me Study Analysis

open access: yesLifestyle Genomics, 2021
Introduction: Carbohydrate intake and physical activity are related to glucose homeostasis, both being influenced by individual genetic makeup. However, the interactions between these 2 factors, as affected by genetics, on glycaemia have been scarcely ...

The usefulness of dietary medium-chain triglycerides in body weight control: fact or fancy?

open access: yesJournal of Lipid Research, 1996
Compared to long-chain triglycerides (LCT), medium-chain triglycerides (MCT) display some specific physico-chemical, and biological characteristics. Thus, MCT are currently used in clinical nutrition as energy-yielding substrates, and have been advocated

Temporal profiles describing markers of inflammation and metabolism during the transition period of pasture-based, seasonal-calving dairy cows

open access: yesJournal of Dairy Science, 2022
: The physiology of the dairy cow while transitioning from pregnancy to lactation is complex, with multifactorial processes studied extensively for the role they play in manifestation of disease along with associated economic losses and compromised ...

From mice to humans—divergent strategies for intestinal homeostasis and regeneration

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Recent advances such as organoid genome editing, xenotransplantation, imaging, and whole‐genome sequencing have enabled direct studies of human intestinal stem cells (ISCs). These studies reveal species‐specific features, including slower ISC proliferation, distinct injury responses, slower somatic mutation accumulation in humans, and an inverse ...

Aspects of the respiratory metabolism of juvenile rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) at sustained swimming speeds [PDF]

open access: yes, 1993
Bibliography: leaves 98-111.A detailed description of the design of an apparatus suitable for investigations into the respiratory physiology of small nektonic organisms at various swimming speeds is presented. Juvenile rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss)

Unraveling the Adipose Tissue Proteome of Transition Cows through Severe Negative Energy Balance

open access: yesAnimals, 2019
Fat mobilization in high-yielding dairy cows during early lactation occurs to overcome negative energy balance (NEB), caused by insufficient feed intake and the concomitant increased nutritional requirements. For this reason, adipose tissue represents an

Reconstructing enzyme evolution by protein engineering

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Natural enzyme evolution can be retraced by protein engineering methods such as directed evolution, rational design, and ancestral sequence reconstruction. These approaches reveal how enzymes emerged from ligand‐binding scaffolds, developed varying substrate preferences, formed oligomeric complexes, adapted to environmental changes, and evolved novel ...

Integrated Proteomics and Lipidomics Reveal That the Swarming Motility of Paenibacillus polymyxa Is Characterized by Phospholipid Modification, Surfactant Deployment, and Flagellar Specialization Relative to Swimming Motility

open access: yesFrontiers in Microbiology, 2019
Paenibacillus polymyxa is a Gram-positive bacterium commonly found associated with plant roots. P. polymyxa can exhibit two forms of flagellar motility: swimming in liquid culture and swarming on a surface.

Sustained AMPK Activation and Proline Metabolism Play Critical Roles in the Survival of Matrix-Deprived Transformed Cells

open access: yesFrontiers in Cell and Developmental Biology, 2021
Attachment to the matrix is critical for the survival of adherent cells, whereas detachment triggers death by apoptosis. Therefore, solid tumors must acquire the ability to survive the stress of matrix-detachment to transit through circulation and seed ...

An epithelial GPR35 isoform supports tumor‐associated transcriptional and metabolic phenotypes

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
GPR35 generates two functionally distinct isoforms with previously unresolved roles. GPR35‐short mediates immune‐cell chemotaxis, while GPR35‐long is enriched in colorectal cancer epithelium, where it supports increased metabolism, proliferation, and tumor‐associated transcriptional programs.
