Effects of cobalt and chromium ions on oxidative stress and energy metabolism in macrophages in vitro

open access: yes, 2018
Cobalt and chromium ions released from cobalt-chromium-molybdenum (CoCrMo)-based implants are a potential health concern, especially since both ions have been shown to induce oxidative stress in macrophages, the predominant immune cells in periprosthetic

Peripheral lysosomes recruit PLEKHG3 to focal adhesions and restrain protrusion dynamics

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Proximity‐dependent labeling at the LAMTOR complex revealed the Rho GEF PLEKHG3 as a lysosome‐proximal protein directing the study toward the influence of lysosome positioning on actin dynamics and cell motility. We show that PLEKHG3 colocalizes with lysosomes at focal adhesion sites and observe that forced peripheral dispersion of lysosomes hinders ...

Central carbon metabolism of the biocontrol yeast Pichia anomala [PDF]

open access: yes, 2004
The biocontrol yeast Pichia anomala prevents mould damage of moist cereal grain during malfunctioning airtight storage but it can also spoil food and feed. This thesis focuses on the physiology and metabolism of P.

Alteration of JNK-1 signaling in skeletal muscle fails to affect glucose homeostasis and obesity-associated insulin resistance in mice. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2013
Obesity and associated metabolic disturbances, such as increased circulating fatty acids cause prolonged low grade activation of inflammatory signaling pathways in liver, skeletal muscle, adipose tissue and even in the CNS.

Partial depletion of plasminogen activator inhibitor‐1 decreases subcutaneous fat cell hypertrophy and liver cholesterol in high‐fat‐fed female mice

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Obesity raises blood levels of PAI‐1, a protein linked to metabolic dysfunction‐associated steatotic liver disease in people with obesity. In female mice fed a high‐fat diet, partially lowering PAI‐1 led to smaller subcutaneous fat cells and lower liver cholesterol, without changing body weight or insulin sensitivity.

Genetic Relationship of Body Energy and Blood Metabolites with Reproduction in Holstein Cows [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
Body condition score (BCS), energy content (EC), cumulative effective energy balance (CEEB), and blood serum concentrations of glucose, beta-hydroxybutyrate (BHBA), and nonesterified fatty acids ( NEFA) were measured throughout first lactation in 497 ...

Dodecanedioic Acid: Alternative Carbon Substrate or Toxic Metabolite?

open access: yesBiomolecules
Twelve-carbon dicarboxylic acid dodecanedioic acid (DODA) has gained recent interest as an alternative nutrient. However, little is known about DODA cellular metabolism.

Emerging experimental and computational methods for studying redox‐regulated structural transitions

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Redox reactions can reshape proteins and alter how they behave in cells, with important consequences for health and disease. This review explores emerging experimental and computational approaches for discovering these redox‐sensitive protein switches, revealing their structural effects, and predicting their behavior, opening new opportunities to ...

A review of the Energy Productivity Center's Least-Cost Energy Strategy study [PDF]

open access: yes, 1981
The Mellon Institute's Energy Productivity Center (EPC) has recently completed a study asking the question, "How would the nation have provided energy services in 1978 if its capital stock had een reconfigured to be optimal for actual 1978 energy prices?"

Synergistic perspectives—How single‐molecule biophysics complement biochemical understanding

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
In this review, we discuss how ensemble biochemistry and single‐molecule approaches are complementary, outline commonly used single‐molecule techniques, and illustrate their relevance through two representative case studies: chromatin organization by SMC complexes and pathway choice during DNA double‐strand break repair.
