Cross tolerance between morphine and methionine-enkephalin

Nature, 1976
TOLERANCE and dependence are characteristic symptoms in man during prolonged use of opiates. We have pointed out1 that for an understanding of these phenomena the interaction between endogenous enkephalin and exogenous opiates is of importance. Normally, enkephalin can be assumed to control inhibitory mechanisms determining the rate of neurotransmitter

Methionine Enkephalin: Clinical Pharmacology

1986
Earlier studies indicated that methionine enkephalin infusions (1,000 micrograms) in normal volunteers induced facial flushing, general vasodilation and noisy stomach (borborgymi). Blood pressure and pulse rate were normal in all experiments. Plasma levels of pancreatic polypeptide, somatostatin, T3 and T4, TSH, FSH, PRL, ACTH, and GH were unchanged ...

Proton Magnetic Resonance Studies of Methionine Enkephalin

Biochemical and Biophysical Research Communications, 1996
In the literature there exist two conflicting pieces of data concerning the thermodynamics of the Cu(2+)-methionine enkephalin complex. One study utilized 1H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) to study the solution phase Cu(2+)-enkephalin binding and reported a strong interaction over a wide pH range. Another study utilized potentiometry to measure a log

Amino-terminal extension analogs of methionine-enkephalin

Biochemical and Biophysical Research Communications, 1978
Abstract Five NH 2 -terminal extension analogs of methionine-enkephalin have been synthesized by solid phase methodology and their morphinomimetic activity determined in the guinea pig ileum-myenteric plexus preparation. Relative to methionine-enkephalin which corresponds to β-LPH-(61–65) and arbitrarily assigned a potency value of 100, β-LPH-(60–65),

Methionine-enkephalin and morphine: Amount ejected microiontophoretically

Journal of Neuroscience Methods, 1981
The microiontophoretic transport numbers of Met-enkephalin and morphine were determined by ejecting the tritiated compounds from both 5-barrel and 7-barrel micro-pipettes into a small volume of 0.9% NaCl, using a series of ejection currents and various timed durations.

Immunoreactive Methionine-Enkephalin Secretion by Porcine Uterus*

Endocrinology, 1991
The current study examined the presence of immunoreactive methionine-enkephalin (ir-MENK) in porcine uterine fluid and endometrial extracts, characterized ir-MENK biochemically, and investigated the effect of ovarian steroids on uterine secretion of ir-MENK. Porcine uterine fluid was collected by flushing the uterine lumen with saline.

Methionine Enkephalin: A New Cytokine—Human Studies

Clinical Immunology and Immunopathology, 1997
The effects of methionine enkephalin (met-enkephalin) on human immune function are reviewed. This pentapeptide functions to upregulate, or enhance, immune function in the majority of donor samples at low doses and suppresses at high doses. The influence of this molecule is shared by the central nervous, neuroendocrine, and immune systems.

Immunocytochemical localization of methionine enkephalin: Preliminary observations

Life Sciences, 1977
Abstract Antiserum directed against methionine enkephalin (metenkephalin) was used to determine its anatomical distribution in rat brain. Cross reactivity of that antiserum was not detectable against leucine enkephalin (leu-enkephalin), β-lipotropin (β-LPH), β-endorphin or assorted peptide fragments of met-enkephalin; alpha-endorphin was 370 times ...

Methionine enkephalin regulates microglia polarization and function

International Immunopharmacology, 2016
Methionine enkephalin (MENK), an opioid peptide, is known to function as a regulator in the immune system. As microglia are considered the most important immune cells in the central nervous system (CNS), we aimed to assess the function of MENK on microglia polarization and tumoricidal responses.

Influence of Ethanol Dependence and Methionine Enkephalin Antisense on Serum Endomorphin‐1 and Methionine Enkephalin Levels

Alcoholism: Clinical and Experimental Research, 2004
Abstract: Background: Opiate peptides are involved in the physical dependence on ethanol. Levels of methionine enkephalin (MEnk), for example, are affected by ethanol. No study on the effect of ethanol on endomorphin, the endogenous ligand for the μ‐opiate receptor, has yet been conducted. Methods: We examined the effect of ethanol ingestion on serum
