Rational Design of a Synthetic Galliphore for the Diagnostic Nuclear Imaging and Treatment of Bacterial Infections

open access: yesAngewandte Chemie, EarlyView.
KO‐NH2 is a synthetic metallophore that preferentially binds Ga3+ over Fe3+ and is recognized by bacterial transporters. Photocrosslinking identifies CirA and Fiu as key uptake proteins in E. coli. KO‐NH2 enables targeted imaging and treatment of E. coli soft tissue infections.

A Listeria monocytogenes ST2 clone lacking chitinase ChiB from an outbreak of non-invasive gastroenteritis

open access: yesEmerging Microbes and Infections, 2019
An outbreak with a remarkable Listeria monocytogenes clone causing 163 cases of non-invasive listeriosis occurred in Germany in 2015. Core genome multi locus sequence typing grouped non-invasive outbreak isolates and isolates obtained from related food ...

Characterisation of the effects of salicylidene acylhydrazide compounds on type three secretion in Escherichia coli O157:H7 [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
Recent work has highlighted a number of compounds that target bacterial virulence by affecting gene regulation. In this work, we show that small-molecule inhibitors affect the expression of the type III secretion system (T3SS) of <i>Escherichia ...

Toward an Integrated Genome-Based Surveillance of Salmonella enterica in Germany

open access: yesFrontiers in Microbiology, 2021
Despite extensive monitoring programs and preventative measures, Salmonella spp. continue to cause tens of thousands human infections per year, as well as many regional and international food-borne outbreaks, that are of great importance for public ...

On the role of cell chaining in the attenuation of a Listeria monocytogenes divIVA mutant

open access: yesVirulence
Listeria monocytogenes is a human pathogen invading nonphagocytic host cells, replicating within their cytosol, and spreading directly from cell to cell. These processes are mediated by specialized virulence factors but also depend on the DivIVA protein.

Genomic surveillance of STEC/EHEC infections in Germany 2020 to 2022 permits insight into virulence gene profiles and novel O-antigen gene clusters

open access: yesInternational Journal of Medical Microbiology
Shiga toxin-producing E. coli (STEC), including the subgroup of enterohemorrhagic E. coli (EHEC), are important bacterial pathogens which cause diarrhea and the severe clinical manifestation hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS).

Antimicrobial resistant and extended‐spectrum β‐lactamase producing Escherichia coli in common wild bird species in Switzerland

open access: yesMicrobiologyOpen, 2019
A total of 294 fecal swabs from 294 wild birds in Switzerland were cultivated for antimicrobial resistant (AMR) Escherichia coli. Samples were also subcultivated to detect E.

Trends in Isolation and Antimicrobial Susceptibility of Enteropathogenic Bacteria in 2011-2019 at a Korean Tertiary Care Hospital Compared with Data in the Preceding Reports

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical Microbiology, 2021
Background: Environmental sanitation plays a significant role on the prevalence of enteropathogenic bacteria. This study aimed to determine the trends in the prevalence and antimicrobial resistance profiles of enteropathogenic bacteria from 2011 to ...

Feedborne Salmonella enterica Serovar Jerusalem Outbreak in Different Organic Poultry Flocks in Switzerland and Italy Linked to Soya Expeller

open access: yesMicroorganisms, 2021
Poultry feed is a leading source of Salmonella infection in poultry. In Switzerland, heat-treated feed is used to reduce Salmonella incursions into flocks in conventional poultry production.

Photocatalytic and Biotechnological Strategies for Remediation of Persistent Organic Pollutants: Mechanisms, Toxicity, and Antimicrobial Perspectives

open access: yesEnvironmental Toxicology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Persistent organic pollutants (POPs) pose significant ecological and human health risks due to their persistence, bioaccumulation, toxicity, and global distribution. Conventional remediation methods are often inadequate for achieving complete mineralization, demonstrating the need for advanced and substantial approaches.
