Entire male pig production in Europe
Animal Production Science, 2015In Europe the proportion of male pigs that are left ‘entire’ has been high for many years in the British Isles and Iberian Peninsula, and has recently increased in The Netherlands and to a lesser extent in Germany and France. Various European Union partners agreed in 2010 on a road map to abandon piglet castration by 1 January 2018. Despite significant

Quality of meat from entire male pigs
Food Research International, 1995Abstract This paper reviews the meat quality characteristics of meat from entire male pigs. The advantages and disadvantages of meat from entire male pigs are discussed. The areas requiring further study are emphasized. Entire males, compared to other genders, have a slightly lower dressing percentage (2–2.5%) but higher lean content (5%).

Organic acids in diets for entire male pigs
Livestock Science, 2007Abstract The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of organic acids in diets for entire male pigs on growth performance, composition of microbiota in the gastrointestinal tract (GIT), on concentration of skatole and indole in digesta, plasma and adipose tissue, and concentration of volatile fatty acids (VFA) in digesta.

SENSORY CHARACTERIZATION OF BOAR TAINT IN ENTIRE MALE PIGS
Journal of Sensory Studies, 2000ABSTRACTBoar taint has been associated with the pork from entire males. Sensory profiles have been carried out in several studies showing the multidimensional property of boar taint. However, no agreement on the number and kind of descriptors has been reached.

Chicory fructans in pig diet reduce skatole in back fat of entire male pigs
Research in Veterinary Science, 2017Androstenone, skatole and indole are main compounds responsible for boar taint, an off-odour in meat of some entire male pigs. Several feed ingredients derived from chicory have been reported to reduce fat skatole levels, while results for indole are more contradictory.

Sensory characteristics of meat and meat products from entire male pigs
Meat Science, 2017The surgical castration of male piglets has traditionally been practised to prevent the development of boar taint in pork meat, but European rules aim to end this practice on a voluntary basis. This study represents a sensory characterization of the meat and meat products from entire male pigs.

A Benefit Cost Analysis of Entire Male Pig Immuno-castration
2022Consumers of fresh pork have long been aware of the risk of their pork purchases not meeting eating expectations due to unpleasant taste or smell or other unsatisfactory quality characteristics such as a lack of tenderness. Boar taint, or the risk of it, is one of the most important factors identified in surveys of consumers of pork as being ...

Use of Entire Males for Pig Meat in the European Union
Meat Science, 1998The aim of the present paper is to review the present knowledge concerning the possible use of entire male pigs for meat production, with particular emphasis on the current situation in EU countries. Raising entire male pigs has a number of advantages including lower production costs, leaner carcass, reduction of the output of pollutants in the manure ...

Suppression of androstenone in entire male pigs by anabolic preparations
Livestock Production Science, 2001At an age of 19 weeks and an average weight of 80.5 kg, four boars each were implanted i.m. with two doses of eitherSynovex-HÒ (SH; total dose 400 mg testosterone propionate140 mg oestradiol benzoate) or Synovex PlusÒ (SP; total dose400 mg trenbolone acetate156 mg oestradiol benzoate), respectively.
