Gene clusters located on two large plasmids determine spore crystal association (SCA) in Bacillus thuringiensis subsp. finitimus strain YBT-020. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2011
Crystals in Bacillus thuringiensis are usually formed in the mother cell compartment during sporulation and are separated from the spores after mother cell lysis.

Characterization of Chicken IgY Specific to Clostridium difficile R20291 Spores and the Effect of Oral Administration in Mouse Models of Initiation and Recurrent Disease

open access: yesFrontiers in Cellular and Infection Microbiology, 2017
Clostridium difficile infection (CDI) are the leading cause of world-wide nosocomial acquired diarrhea. The current main clinical challenge in CDI is the elevated rate of infection recurrence that may reach up to 30% of the patients, which has been ...

Chemical Composition of Exosporium from Spores of Bacillus cereus [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Bacteriology, 1970
Homogeneous fragments of exosporium were extricated in centigram amounts from dormant spores of Bacillus cereus and analyzed for intrinsic constituents. The membrane proved to be chemically complex but not unique, consisting mainly of protein (52%), amino and neutral polysaccharides (20%), lipids (18%), and ash (4%).

A putative exosporium lipoprotein GBAA0190 of Bacillus anthracis as a potential anthrax vaccine candidate

open access: yesBMC Immunology, 2021
Background Bacillus ancthracis causes cutaneous, pulmonary, or gastrointestinal forms of anthrax. B. anthracis is a pathogenic bacterium that is potentially to be used in bioterrorism because it can be produced in the form of spores.

Assessment of chemical methods in the extraction of spore surface layers in Clostridioides difficile spores

open access: yesmSphere
Clostridioides difficile spores are essential for initiation, recurrence, and transmission of C. difficile infections (CDI). These outermost layers of the spore, the exosporium and spore coat, are responsible for initial interactions with the host and ...

Spore morphology of Selaginella borealis, S. sanguinolenta and S. helvetica (Selaginellaceae, Lycopodiophyta)

open access: yesTurczaninowia, 2019
For the first time we have conducted a study of three species of the genus Selaginella P. Beauv. from Russia: S. sanguinolenta (L.) Spring, S. helvetica (L.) Link and S. borealis (Kaulf.) Rupr. using the method of scanning electron microscopy (SEM). In a

Exosporium and Spore Coat Formation in Bacillus cereus T [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Bacteriology, 1973
The exosporium of Bacillus cereus T was first observed as a small lamella in the cytoplasm in proximity to the outer forespore membrane (OFSM) near the middle of the sporangium. Serial sections, various staining methods, and enzyme treatments failed to show any connections between the small lamella and the OFSM. The

Role of the exosporium in the stability of theBacillus sphaericusbinary toxin [PDF]

open access: yesFEMS Microbiology Letters, 1994
The persistence of toxicity of the Bacillus sphaericus 1593 binary toxin was compared when produced in B. sphaericus, inside the exosporium, or in a recombinant B. thuringiensis strain, outside the exosporium. The stability of the toxin crystal was affected by temperature and quality of the water, but not by the location of the production in the ...

Amyloidogenic Peptide Fragments Designed From Bacterial Collagen‐like Proteins Form Hydrogel

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, Volume 36, Issue 40, 18 May 2026.
This study identified amyloidogenic sequence motifs in bacterial collagen‐like proteins and exploited these to design peptides that self‐assemble into β‐sheet fibers and form hydrogels. One hydrogel supported healthy fibroblast growth, showing promise for biocompatible materials. Our work demonstrates that bacterial sequences can be harnessed to create

Exosporium Formation in Sporulating Cells ofClostridium botulinum78A [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Bacteriology, 1972
In sporulating cells ofClostridium botulinumtype A (NCA strain 78A), formation of exosporia was initiated laterally in the sporangia before the synthesis of the spore cortex. Mature spores were enveloped by multilayered exosporia; the layers were uniform in appearance, approximately 3 nm thick, with a center-to-center distance of 7 nm.
