Natural killer cells in experimental and human leishmaniasis

open access: yesFrontiers in Cellular and Infection Microbiology, 2012
Infections with parasites of the genus Leishmania lead to a rapid, but transient activation of natural killer (NK) cells. In mice activation of NK cells requires a toll-like-receptor 9-dependent stimulation of dendritic cells followed by the production ...

Therapeutic Activity of a Topical Formulation Containing 8-Hydroxyquinoline for Cutaneous Leishmaniasis

open access: yesPharmaceutics, 2023
Cutaneous leishmaniasis exhibits a wide spectrum of clinical manifestations; however, only a limited number of drugs are available and include Glucantime® and amphotericin B, which induce unacceptable side effects in patients, limiting their use.

Exploring Biological Properties of Manganese(II)‐Phenanthroline‐Based Complexes: In Vitro Insights

open access: yesChemistrySelect, Volume 11, Issue 29, 3 August 2026.
Four Mn(II) complexes with phenanthroline derivatives were studied. These compounds were tested against several parasites and different human cancer cells. Despite its cytotoxicity on breast cancer, DNA seems not to be the main biological target. These complexes can drive the design and development of new metal‐based agents with improved biological ...

Identification of a Benzenesulfonylpiperazine Derivative With In Vivo Efficacy Against Visceral Leishmaniasis

open access: yesChemical Biology &Drug Design, Volume 108, Issue 2, August 2026.
This work highlights the satisfactory pharmacokinetic profile of two benzenesulfonylpiperazine lead candidates, followed by in vivo assessment in a murine model of visceral leishmaniasis. This assessment identified compound 2 as moderately active at a lower dose, but its efficacy increased at higher doses, though with concerns regarding safety.

Effect of Prophylactic Vaccination with the Membrane-Bound Acid Phosphatase Gene of Leishmania mexicana in the Murine Model of Localized Cutaneous Leishmaniasis

open access: yesJournal of Immunology Research, 2021
Leishmaniasis is a disease caused by an intracellular protozoan parasite of the genus Leishmania. Current treatments for leishmaniasis are long, toxic, and expensive and are not available in some endemic regions.

Vectors and Vector‐Borne Diseases: Biology, Epidemiology and Integrated Control Strategies

open access: yesJournal of Applied Entomology, Volume 150, Issue 7, Page 990-1015, August 2026.
ABSTRACT Vector‐Borne Diseases (VBDs), transmitted by arthropods such as mosquitoes, ticks, fleas and sandflies, represent a significant threat to global health. These diseases can be caused by a variety of pathogens, including bacteria, viruses, protozoa, and helminths.

Leishmaniasis in rheumatoid arthritis

open access: yesReumatismo, 2011
Leishmaniasis represents a complex of diseases with an important clinical and epidemiological diversity. Visceral leishmaniasis is of higher priority than cutaneous leishmaniasis as it is a fatal disease in the absence of treatment. The clinical spectrum

Recombinant LPG3 Protein From Leishmania chagasi as an Antigen for the Diagnosis of Canine Visceral Leishmaniasis

open access: yesTropical Medicine &International Health, Volume 31, Issue 8, Page 1057-1065, August 2026.
ABSTRACT Visceral leishmaniasis (VL) is a human neglected tropical disease in which dogs participate as reservoirs of the etiological agent Leishmania chagasi. The identification of infected dogs is important to the control of VL, and recombinant proteins are strong antigen candidates for canine visceral leishmaniasis (CVL) serodiagnosis. In this work,

Probing 5‐Nitroimidazole‐Triazole Hybrids as Potential Anti‐Kinetoplastid Agents: Synthesis and In Vitro Efficacy

open access: yesChemMedChem, Volume 21, Issue 13, 14 July 2026.
A series of 5‐nitroimidazole‐1,2,3‐triazole hybrids was synthesised and evaluated for antitrypanosomatid activity to assess their potential as treatments against leishmaniasis and trypanosomiasis. No notable in vitro activity against Leishmania was detected.
