Expression of the Inhibitory CD200 Receptor Is Associated with Alternative Macrophage Activation [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
Classical macrophage activation is inhibited by the CD200 receptor (CD200R). Here, we show that CD200R expression was specifically induced on human in vitro polarized macrophages of the alternatively activated M2a subtype, generated by incubation with IL-

De Novo Fatty Acid Synthesis During Mycobacterial Infection Is a Prerequisite for the Function of Highly Proliferative T Cells, But Not for Dendritic Cells or Macrophages

open access: yesFrontiers in Immunology, 2018
Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb), the causative agent of human tuberculosis, is able to efficiently manipulate the host immune system establishing chronic infection, yet the underlying mechanisms of immune evasion are not fully understood.

Streptomycin in Experimental Ocular Infections.

open access: yesExperimental Biology and Medicine, 1947
Summary1. The penetrability of streptomycin through the cornea may be increased by abrasion, inflammation, ion-transfer and wetting agents. 2. No local toxic effects were noted when saline solutions of streptomycin containing up to 10,000 μg per ml were used. With concentrations of 50,000 μg or as a dry powder, delayed healing occurred. 3.

Dimethyl fumarate combined with cisplatin at subcytotoxic doses sensitizes cervical cancer toward ferroptosis and apoptosis through GSH restriction and p53 (re)activation

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Dimethyl fumarate (DMF) reduces growth of HPV‐positive cervical cancer spheroids and induces ferroptosis in cervical cancer cells via blocking SLC7A11/Glutathione (GSH) axis. Combination of subcytotoxic doses of DMF and cisplatin (CDDP) further suppresses spheroid growth and drives cell death in 2D culture models.

HCV Pit Stop at the Lipid Droplet: Refuel Lipids and Put on a Lipoprotein Coat before Exit

open access: yesCells, 2019
The replication cycle of the liver-tropic hepatitis C virus (HCV) is tightly connected to the host lipid metabolism, during the virus entry, replication, assembly and egress stages, but also while the virus circulates in the bloodstream.

Experimental Intraperitoneal Infection of Piglets

open access: yes
Streptococcus suis is a swine bacterial pathogen that predominantly causes disease in weaned piglets characterized by swelling of joints, arthritis, septicemia, meningitis, and sudden death. Intravenous, intramuscular, intraperitoneal, and intranasal infection models were developed to study the bacterial pathogenicity and efficacy of vaccines and ...

Engineered extracellular vesicles enriched with the miR‐214/199a cluster enhance the efficacy of chemotherapy in ovarian cancer

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Loss of the miR‐214/199a cluster is associated with recurrence in ovarian cancer. Engineered small extracellular vesicles (m214‐sEVs) elevate miR‐214‐3p/miR‐199a‐5p in tumor cells, suppress β‐catenin, TLR4, and YKT6 signaling, reprogram tumor‐derived sEV cargo, reduce chemoresistance and migration, and enhance carboplatin efficacy and survival in ...

Sex-dependent susceptibility to Listeria monocytogenes infection is mediated by differential interleukin-10 production [PDF]

open access: yes, 2005
It is well documented that sex-dependent factors affect susceptibility to infection, with most mouse models demonstrating higher resistance in females.

Type I Interferon Receptor Signaling of Neurons and Astrocytes Regulates Microglia Activation during Viral Encephalitis

open access: yesCell Reports, 2018
Summary: In sterile neuroinflammation, a pathological role is proposed for microglia, whereas in viral encephalitis, their function is not entirely clear. Many viruses exploit the odorant system and enter the CNS via the olfactory bulb (OB).

Establishment of a humanized patient‐derived xenograft mouse model of high‐grade serous ovarian cancer for preclinical evaluation of combination immunotherapy

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
We have established a humanized orthotopic patient‐derived xenograft (Hu‐oPDX) mouse model of high‐grade serous ovarian cancer (HGSOC) that recapitulates human tumor–immune interactions. Using combined anti‐PD‐L1/anti‐CD73 immunotherapy, we demonstrate the model's improved biological relevance and enhanced translational value for preclinical ...
