Abstracting from failure probabilities
Proceedings Second International Conference on Application of Concurrency to System Design, 2002In fault-tolerant computing, dependability of systems is usually demonstrated by abstracting from failure probabilities (under simplifying assumptions on failure occurrences). In the specification framework Focus, we show under which conditions and to which extent this is sound: We use a specification language that is interpreted in the usual abstract ...

System Failure Probability Modelling
2015We examine the logical probabilistic modelling of a complex system’s blocks failures with the considerations of the connections between the blocks, based on the logical linguistic approach. We describe the modelling procedure, implementing the logical probabilistic and logical linguistic modelling approaches.

Small failure probability: principles, progress and perspectives
Structural and Multidisciplinary Optimization, 2022Design of structural and multidisciplinary systems under uncertainties requires estimation of their reliability or equivalently the probability of failure under the given operating conditions. Various high technology systems including aircraft and nuclear power plants are designed for very small probabilities of failure, and estimation of these small ...

Choice of Failure Probabilities
Journal of the Structural Division, 1967The choice of an optimum level of structural safety for one type of failure is formulated on the basis of the minimum expected loss criterion applied to an idealized basic scheme. Limits of sensitivity to initial costs are introduced and shown to lead to limits on sensitivity to failure probability.

Probability of Plastic Collapse Failure
Journal of the Structural Division, 1969The probability of a plastic collapse failure for a structure of random material strength acted on by random loads can be evaluated considering that failure may occur by any one of the possible failure mechanisms for the structure. A single-bay single-story structure acted on by wind and snow loads is considered.

Comparison of tunnel failure frequencies and failure probabilities
2019The comparison of the calculated failure probabilities of technical systems with the observed failure frequencies is an important part of the verification of probabilistic calculations. It can point to significant factors that are neglected in the calculations.

Comparison of dam failure frequencies and failure probabilities
Beton- und Stahlbetonbau, 2018AbstractRecently the author has compared observed collapse frequencies and computed failure probabilities of bridges. In contrast, in this paper the comparison of observed failure frequencies and the failure probabilities of large dams is carried out.In the paper the failure frequencies are estimated based on various publications related to the failure

Abstract The failure probability function (FPF) is defined as a function of failure probability varying with the design parameters of random inputs, and it is usually estimated in advance to transform reliability-based design optimization into ordinary one.

On estimation of failure probability
Reliability Engineering & System Safety, 1988Abstract A method is proposed for estimation of failure probability P f = P(S − R > 0) for a component of strength R subject to a stress S. The method, which is based on statistical modelling of the tail of the distribution for S-R, makes no assumption concerning the form of the distribution for R and S.

Pipe and vessel failure probability
Reliability Engineering, 1981Abstract This generalised approach to the estimation of failure probability is based on a pragmatic and scientific analysis of actual service failure statistics. Approximation strategies have been devised in order to estimate failure probability at the leakage level P L and for rupture P C .
