Fatty acid desaturase specificity in tetrahymena

Lipids, 1984
AbstractThe ciliate,Tetrahymena, was provided a supplement of the fatty acid [1‐14C] 18∶2Δ6,9. After a period of growth the cells were claimed, the lipids extracted, the polar lipids recovered and the mild alkali‐labile fatty acid methyl esters generated.

Structure and expression of fatty acid desaturases

Biochimica et Biophysica Acta (BBA) - Lipids and Lipid Metabolism, 1998
Fatty acid desaturases are enzymes that introduce double bonds into fatty acyl chains. They are present in all groups of organisms, i.e., bacteria, fungi, plants and animals, and play a key role in the maintenance of the proper structure and functioning of biological membranes.

Studies on the inhibition of the desaturases by cyclopropenoid fatty acids

Lipids, 1977
AbstractUnwashed rat liver microsomes were used to study the inhibition of the Δ6 and Δ9 desaturases by cyclopropenoid fatty acids with the ring structure about the 9,10 or 6,7 carbon atoms. The 9,10 cyclopropenoid acid (sterculic acid) is shown to be an effective inhibitor of only Δ9 desaturase and then only in the presence of MgCl2 and coenzyme A ...

Unsaturated Fatty Acids, Desaturases, and Human Health

Journal of Medicinal Food, 2014
With the increasing concern for health and nutrition, dietary fat has attracted considerable attention. The composition of fatty acids in a diet is important since they are associated with major diseases, such as cancers, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease.

Utilization of C20-polyunsaturated fatty acids by a yeast fatty acid desaturase mutant

Biochemical and Biophysical Research Communications, 1973
Abstract A study was made of the utilization of C 20 -polyunsaturated fatty acids by the S. cerevisiae fatty acid desaturase mutant olel-1 , Arachidonic acid, 8,11,14-eicosatrienoic acid, and 5,8,11,14,17-eicosapentaenoic acid were about equally effective in supporting growth with lactate as the carbon source.
