Molecular pathophysiology of chronic kidney disease–mineral and bone disorder: Focus on the fibroblast growth factor 23–Klotho axis and bone turnover dynamics

open access: yesExperimental Physiology, EarlyView.
Abstract Chronic kidney disease–mineral and bone disorder (CKD‐MBD) is a major complication of chronic kidney disease (CKD), characterized by disruptions in mineral metabolism, abnormal bone turnover and vascular calcification, which collectively increase the risk of fractures and cardiovascular disease.

Lipocalin 2 stimulates bone fibroblast growth factor 23 production in chronic kidney disease

open access: yesBone Research, 2021
Bone-produced fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF23) increases in response to inflammation and iron deficiency and contributes to cardiovascular mortality in chronic kidney disease (CKD). Neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (NGAL or lipocalin 2; LCN2

Proteomic signatures of equine dental tooth tissues in ageing and disease

open access: yesEquine Veterinary Journal, Volume 58, Issue 6, Page 1552-1569, November 2026.
Abstract Background Ageing and dental disease in horses lead to structural and functional deterioration of dental tissues, yet their molecular signatures remain poorly characterised. Understanding how these processes alter the protein composition of enamel, dentin, cementum and pulp is essential for improving equine oral health and identifying ...

FGF23 (Fibroblast Growth Factor-23) and Incident Hypertension in Young and Middle-Aged Adults [PDF]

open access: yesHypertension, 2018
Blacks have the highest prevalence of hypertension in the United States. Higher levels of FGF23 (fibroblast growth factor-23) have been associated with worse cardiovascular outcomes. Whether FGF23 is associated with rising blood pressure (BP) and racial differences in incident hypertension is unclear. We studied 1758 adults (45.0±3.7 years;

Short‐term fasting of mice elevates circulating fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF23)

open access: yesActa Physiologica, 2023
AbstractAimsPhosphate and vitamin D homeostasis are controlled by fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF23) from bone suppressing renal phosphate transport and enhancing 24‐hydroxylase (Cyp24a1), thereby inactivating 1,25(OH)2D3. Serum FGF23 is correlated with outcomes in several diseases. Fasting stimulates the production of ketone bodies.

Paricalcitol improved cardiac hypertrophy and fibrosis through upregulation of fibroblast growth factor-23 and downregulation of transforming growth factor-beta in a rat model of isoproterenol-induced cardiomyopathy

open access: yesChinese Journal of Physiology, 2023
Acute cardiomyopathy is a significant global health concern and one of the leading causes of death in developed countries. Prior studies have shown an association between acute cardiomyopathy and low vitamin D levels.

Vitamin D: Physiology, Pharmacology and Clinical Evidence for Supplementation—A Narrative Review

open access: yesBasic &Clinical Pharmacology &Toxicology, Volume 139, Issue 5, November 2026.
ABSTRACT Vitamin D is a nutrient and prohormone obtained from diet and supplements and synthesized in the skin. It is essential for calcium and phosphate homeostasis and skeletal health and influences multiple extra‐skeletal processes, yet deficiency remains common worldwide.

Regulation of phosphate transport by fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF23): implications for disorders of phosphate metabolism [PDF]

open access: yesPediatric Nephrology, 2009
There are a number of hypophosphatemic disorders due to renal phosphate wasting that cannot be explained by elevated levels of parathyroid hormone. The circulating factors responsible for the phosphaturia have been designated as phosphatonins. Studies of patients with tumor-induced osteomalacia and other genetic diseases of phosphate metabolism have ...

Zeb2 Controls Retinal Physiological and Pathological Angiogenesis by Regulating Astrocyte Proliferation and Differentiation

open access: yesCell Proliferation, Volume 59, Issue 10, October 2026.
During development, the oxygen‐sensitive transcription factor Zeb2 restrains astrocyte proliferation and maturation to ensure balanced retinal angiogenesis. In disease, it promotes the neurotoxic A1 astrocyte phenotype and inflammation, thereby promoting reparative revascularization over pathological neovascularization.

Tenapanor Beyond Phosphate: Gut Sodium Transport, Stool Transit Time, and Volume Balance in Dialysis Patients

open access: yesHemodialysis International, Volume 30, Issue 4, Page 689-697, October 2026.
ABSTRACT Introduction Tenapanor, a minimally absorbed intestinal NHE3 inhibitor approved for hyperphosphatemia in dialysis, lowers phosphate and reduces intestinal sodium absorption. Its sodium–water signal may have implications beyond phosphate but remains poorly separated from diarrhea‐mediated losses and dialysis prescription artifacts. Methods This
