Cells must clear mislocalized or faulty proteins from membranes to survive. The AAA+ ATPase Msp1 performs this task, but dissecting how its six subunits work together is challenging. We engineered linked dimers with varied numbers of functional subunits to reveal how Msp1 subunits cooperate and use energy to extract proteins from the lipid bilayer ...

The Effectiveness of a Contact Filter for the Removal of Iron from Ground Water [PDF]
Various types of modified filters were investigated to replace greensand filters which clogged when removing ground water. A properly designed uniform-grain sized filter can increase the filtration time more than ten times that of ordinary sand or ...

Phototrophs evolved light‐harvesting systems adapted for efficient photon capture in habitats enriched in far‐red radiation. A subset of eukaryotic pigment‐binding proteins can absorb far‐red photons via low‐energy chlorophyll states known as red forms.

Strong coupling of optical nanoantennas and atomic systems
An optical nanoantenna and adjacent atomic systems are strongly coupled when an excitation is repeatedly exchanged between these subsystems prior to its eventual dissipation into the environment. It remains challenging to reach the strong coupling regime

Telescoping Filter: A Practical Adaptive Filter
Filters are fast, small and approximate set membership data structures. They are often used to filter out expensive accesses to a remote set S for negative queries (that is, a query x not in S). Filters have one-sided errors: on a negative query, a filter may say "present" with a tunable false-positve probability of epsilon.

Vacuolar transport and function of Saccharomyces cerevisiae sterol ester hydrolase Tgl1
Tgl1, one of yeast sterol ester hydrolases, had been found on the lipid droplets where sterol esters are mainly stored. This study revealed that Tgl1 is transported into the vacuole depending on the ESCRT‐I–III complex, and that it exhibits intra‐vacuolar sterol ester hydrolase activity.

A nonlinear filter for compensating for time delays in manual control systems [PDF]
A nonlinear filter configured to provide phase lead without accompanying gain distortion is analyzed and evaluated. The nonlinear filter is superior to a linear lead/lag compensator in its ability to maintain system stability as open loop crossover ...

A Cre‐dependent lentiviral vector for neuron subtype‐specific expression of large proteins
We designed a versatile and modular lentivector comprising a Cre‐dependent switch and self‐cleaving 2A peptide and tested it for co‐expression of GFP and a 2.8 kb gene of interest (GOI) in mouse cortical parvalbumin (PV+) interneurons and midbrain dopamine (TH+) neurons.
