Catholic opponents of abortion and embryonic stem cell research usually base their position on a hylomorphic account of ensoulment at fertilization. They maintain that we each started out as one-cell ensouled organisms. Critics of this position argue that it is plagued by a number of intractable problems due to fission (twinning) and fusion.

AbstractIn this review paper, ternary fission is defined as the break‐up of heavy nuclei into three fragments of approximately equal mass. This relatively new type of nuclear decay has been investigated intensively during the last decade. Muga has studied ternary fission induced by thermal neutrons in uranium.

The cross-section for u238 fission by fission neutrons fission neutrons
Journal of Nuclear Energy (1954), 1957Abstract The cross-section for U 238 fission by neutrons from the thermal-neutron-induced fission of U 235 has been measured to be (0·756 ± 0·008)/gn barn, where ν is the average number of neutrons emitted per U 235 fission. Used with the most recent value of ν for U 235 , ν = 2·46 ± 0·03, this gives 0·307 ± 0·005 barn for the U 238 fission cross-

Fission yields in spontaneous fission of Cf252
Journal of Inorganic and Nuclear Chemistry, 1955Abstract Spontaneous fission of Cf252 has been investigated by radiochemical determination of the yields of fifteen fission products ranging in mass number from 99 to 143. Fission is observed to be asymmetric with some indication of fine structure in the mass distribution associated with the 82-neutron shell.

Cluster-fission, a new fission mode
Europhysics Letters (EPL), 2002Clusters heavier than those observed in the cluster-radioactivity of heavy nuclei can not only be formed in superheavy compound nuclei but also be immediately expelled, because the clusterization energy is very great. This process differs from cluster-radioactivity and constitutes a new type of fission reaction.
