Alcohol and tobacco dependence among medical practitioners
Introduction Excessive use of tobacco, alcohol and other illicit drugs has a negative impact on the physical and mental health and work capacity of users. Physicians are no exception to these dreadful practices.

We show that all symplectically aspherical fillings of the unit cotangent bundle of a given odd-dimensional sphere are diffeomorphic to the corresponding unit co-disc bundle. The concept of fittings previously introduced is not needed.

We reconstituted Synechocystis glycogen synthesis in vitro from purified enzymes and showed that two GlgA isoenzymes produce glycogen with different architectures: GlgA1 yields denser, highly branched glycogen, whereas GlgA2 synthesizes longer, less‐branched chains.

In-vivo mutation rates and fitness landscape of HIV-1
Mutation rates and fitness costs of deleterious mutations are difficult to measure in vivo but essential for a quantitative understanding of evolution. Using whole genome deep sequencing data from longitudinal samples during untreated HIV-1 infection, we

‘Virtual’ mentoring: can the principle of cognitive pairing increase its effectiveness? [PDF]
This paper is based on the experiences of completing a virtual mentoring programme within the higher education sector that used the principle of ‘cognitive pairing’ to enable the rapid establishment of high quality mentoring relationships.

Calpain small subunit homodimerization is robust and calcium‐independent
Calpains dimerize via penta‐EF‐hand (PEF) domains. Using single‐molecule force spectroscopy, we measured the strength and kinetics of PEF–PEF homodimer binding. The interaction is robust, shows a transient conformational step before dissociation, and remains largely insensitive to Ca2+.

Dynamic fitness landscapes: Expansions for small mutation rates [PDF]
We study the evolution of asexual microorganisms with small mutation rate in fluctuating environments, and develop techniques that allow us to expand the formal solution of the evolution equations to first order in the mutation rate.

The term Darwinian fitness refers to the capacity of a variant type to invade and displace the resident population in competition for available resources. Classical models of this dynamical process claim that competitive outcome is a deterministic event which is regulated by the population growth rate, called the Malthusian parameter.

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

Effects of aging on unloading-induced skeletal muscle atrophy and subsequent recovery in rats
Aged individuals with physiological muscle atrophy (sarcopenia) are likely forced into an unloading condition of inactivity such as bed rest and limb-immobilization.
