Feasibility of In Vivo Retinal Flavoprotein Autofluorescence Imaging in a Magnetic‐Bead‐Induced Rodent Glaucoma Model

open access: yesJournal of Biophotonics, Volume 19, Issue 6, June 2026.
A scanning laser ophthalmoscope, integrated with a real‐time optical coherence tomography (OCT) alignment monitor, detected flavoprotein fluorescence (FPF) signals associated with mitochondrial dysfunction in a rodent glaucoma model. Under 450‐nm excitation, experimental eyes showed spatially inhomogeneous signals that were absent under 505‐nm ...

Extracellular Vesicles of Giardia duodenalis: Unravelling Their Virulence Factors and Potential to Induce Protection Against Experimental Giardiasis

open access: yesJournal of Extracellular Biology, Volume 5, Issue 6, June 2026.
ABSTRACT Extracellular vesicles (EVs) are key mediators of intercellular communication, enabling trans‐kingdom exchange of proteins, nucleic acids, lipids, and metabolites. In Giardia duodenalis, EVs contribute to parasite survival, host–pathogen interactions, and immune modulation.

NADPH Dehydrogenase Gene Regulates Energy Distribution and Fatty Acid Metabolism During Fruiting Body Formation in the Filamentous Fungus Podospora anserina

open access: yesMicrobial Biotechnology, Volume 19, Issue 6, June 2026.
NADPH dehydrogenase gene deletion significantly triggered NADPH/NADP+ increase in mutant strains. NADPH gene deletion promoted Fatty acid biosynthesis and repressed β‐oxidation. NADPH gene deletion decreased oxidative phosphorylation and increased substrate‐level phosphorylation. Mutants exhibited hypersensitivity to oxidative stress, but promoted more

Endogenous Flavoprotein Fluorescence Imaging Revealed Increased Metabolic Stress in Nonarteritic Anterior Ischemic Optic Neuropathy

open access: yes, 2023
Endogenous flavoprotein fluorescence (FPF) imaging is an emerging functional assessment of optic neuropathies and retinopathies. An increase in FPF indicates oxidative stress in vivo due to increased blue light absorption and green light emission that ...

Altitude‐Associated Divergence of the Gut Microbiome in Endangered Forest Musk Deer: Evidence From Integrated Metagenomics, Metabolomics, and Culturomics

open access: yesEvolutionary Applications, Volume 19, Issue 6, June 2026.
ABSTRACT High‐altitude environments expose mammals and their gut symbionts to multifaceted stressors—hypoxia, cold, and intense UV radiation. Whether gut microbial communities undergo compositional restructuring in response to these stressors, and whether such restructuring carries translational value for captive conservation, remain unresolved ...

Energetic stress in combination with impaired fatty acid oxidation induces sequestration of CoA and adaptation of CoA metabolism

open access: yesThe FEBS Journal, Volume 293, Issue 12, Page 3565-3587, June 2026.
Computational modelling and in vitro liver cell experiments indicate that medium‐chain acyl‐CoA dehydrogenase (MCAD) deficiency causes an accumulation of (especially medium‐chain) acyl‐CoAs at the cost of free CoA (CoASH). A substantial decrease in CoASH impairs flux through many pathways essential for energy homeostasis.

Principles of intrinisic flavoprotein and NAD(P)H fluorescent imaging.

open access: yes, 2016
Instrinsic flavoprotein (FA) and NAD(P)H fluorescent signals are attributed to mitochondrial activity. Changes in fluorescence are correlated with neuronal activity through increases in metabolic demand resulting from ionic pumps and synaptic activity ...

Unveiling protective mechanisms of wild olive (acebuche) oil in retinal pigment epithelial cells with hypertensive phenotype

open access: yesThe Journal of Physiology, Volume 604, Issue 11, Page 4166-4185, 1 June 2026.
Abstract figure legend Circulating extracellular vesicles (EVs) derived from acebuche (ACE) oil‐ and extra virgin olive oil (EVOO)‐fed mice modulate nitric oxide (NO) metabolism in the retinal pigment epithelial cell line (ARPE19) with a hypertensive phenotype induced by angiotensin II (AngII).

Flavoproteins in Directed Evolution

open access: yes, 2010
