Microencapsulation of flaxseed oil in flaxseed protein and flaxseed gum complex coacervates

Food Research International, 2016
Flaxseed oil, a rich source of omega-3 fatty acids, was microencapsulated in a novel matrix formed by complex coacervation between flaxseed protein isolate (FPI) and flaxseed gum (FG). This matrix was crosslinking with glutaraldehyde. Liquid microcapsules with three core (oil)-to-wall ratios (1:2, 1:3 and 1:4) were prepared and spray-dried or freeze ...

Flaxseed gum from flaxseed hulls: Extraction, fractionation, and characterization

Food Hydrocolloids, 2012
Abstract Soluble dietary fibre with low viscosity has the potential to deliver acceptable mouthfeel and texture when included in the diet in a significant amount to show health benefits. Soluble flaxseed gum (SFG) was reported to have low viscosity, thus has potential in applications as a fibre fortifier.

Flaxseed and Diabetes

Current Pharmaceutical Design, 2015
Flaxseed contains 32% to 45% of its mass as oil of which 51% to 55% is α-linolenic acid. Flax lignan complex and secoisolariciresinol diglucoside (SDG) have been isolated from flaxseed. Flaxseed and its components have antioxidant, hypolipidemic and hypoglycemic effects. These are mostly due to the SDG content.

Flaxseed oil stimulates gynecomastia

BMJ Case Reports, 2020
Flaxseed oil contains lignans, which exhibit anti-inflammatory and antiatherogenic activities. A 70-year-old male patient presented to our office due to hyperlipidaemia and started to take a tablespoon of flaxseed oil daily. Three months later, he reported left breast swelling and pain. Although the echogram revealed a tumour in the left mammary gland,

Specificity of flaxseed lipoxidase

Lipids, 1970
AbstractMass spectrometric data indicate that products of linoleate oxidation by flaxseed lipoxidase consist of 80% 13‐hydroperoxyoctadecadienoate and 20% 9‐hydroperoxyoctadecodienoate; the products of linolenate oxidation by flaxseed lipoxidase consist of 88% 13‐hydroperoxyoctadecatrienoate and 12% 9‐hydroperoxyoctadecatrienoate.

Glycine-Containing Flaxseed Orbitides

Journal of Natural Products, 2015
Five new orbitides, cyclolinopeptides 21-25, were identified in flaxseed oil (Linum usitatissimum) extracts. Their HPLC-ESIMS quasimolecular ion peaks at m/z 1097.7 (21), 1115.6 (22), 1131.6 (23), 1018.6 (24), and 1034.6 (25) [M + H](+) corresponded to the molecular formulae C59H89N10O10, C58H87N10O10S, C58H87N10O11S, C53H80N9O9S, and C53H80N9O10S ...

Flaxseed and Cardiovascular Risk

Nutrition Reviews, 2004
Flaxseed has recently gained attention in the area of cardiovascular disease primarily because it is the richest known source of both alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) and the phytoestrogen, lignans, as well as being a good source of soluble fiber. Human studies have shown that flaxseed can modestly reduce serum total and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol ...

(5) flaxseed and flaxseed oil

The Pharmaceutical Journal, 2001
Flaxseed is a good source of alpha-linolenic acid, which is converted to long-chain omega-3 fatty acids. Like fish oils it may help to correct deficiency of these fatty acids and could be useful for those wishing to supplement their diets with a plant source of these mutrients.

Stability of bioactives in flaxseed and flaxseed-fortified foods

Food Research International, 2015
Abstract Dietary flaxseed is being studied as an alternative or complementary therapy to medications for reducing risk factors related to cardiovascular disease progression. The suggested benefits of alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) as an antihypertensive agent, of secoisolariciresinol diglucoside (SDG) derived enterolignans as antioxidants and estradiol ...

Tocopherols in Flaxseed

Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, 1997
The tocopherol content of oil from eight flaxseed cultivars grown at four locations in western Canada for 3 years was determined to examine genotypic and environmental effects. Flaxseed contained an average of 9.3 mg/100 g of total tocopherol in the seed, with γ-tocopherol representing 96−98% of the total tocopherols.
