Inferring free surface disturbance properties from Kelvin wakes using convolutional neural network

open access: yesFlow
Kelvin wakes are fluid motions generated by a moving disturbance at a free surface. We present a machine learning-based framework for inferring the properties of such moving disturbances from the Kelvin-wake patterns.

Function‐driven design of a surrogate interleukin‐2 receptor ligand

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Interleukin (IL)‐2 signaling can be achieved and precisely fine‐tuned through the affinity, distance, and orientation of the heterodimeric receptors with their ligands. We designed a biased IL‐2 surrogate ligand that selectively promotes effector T and natural killer cell activation and differentiation. Interleukin (IL) receptors play a pivotal role in

A large-eddy simulation study of water tunnel interference effects for a marine propeller in crashback mode of operation

open access: yesFlow
Marine propellers are studied in design and off-design modes of operation like crashback, where the propeller rotates in reverse while the vehicle is in forward motion.

Multiple ETS family transcription factors bind mutant p53 via distinct interaction regions

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Mutant p53 gain‐of‐function is thought to be mediated by interaction with other transcription factors. We identify multiple ETS transcription factors that can bind mutant p53 and found that this interaction can be promoted by a PXXPP motif. ETS proteins that strongly bound mutant p53 were upregulated in ovarian cancer compared to ETS proteins that ...

Wall shear stress generated by a Bernoulli pad: experiments and numerical simulations

open access: yesFlow
Bernoulli pads generate locally large wall shear stresses on workpieces, which can be used for cleaning, but may also damage delicate surfaces. This work presents direct measurements of the wall shear stress using constant-temperature anemometry for the ...

An upstream open reading frame regulates expression of the mitochondrial protein Slm35 and mitophagy flux

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This study reveals how the mitochondrial protein Slm35 is regulated in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The authors identify stress‐responsive DNA elements and two upstream open reading frames (uORFs) in the 5′ untranslated region of SLM35. One uORF restricts translation, and its mutation increases Slm35 protein levels and mitophagy.

New flow observables

open access: yes, 2011
Event-by-event fluctuations of the initial transverse density profile result in a collective flow pattern which also fluctuates event by event. We propose a number of new correlation observables to characterize these fluctuations and discuss how they ...

Sequence determinants of RNA G‐quadruplex unfolding by Arg‐rich regions

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We show that Arg‐rich peptides selectively unfold RNA G‐quadruplexes, but not RNA stem‐loops or DNA/RNA duplexes. This length‐dependent activity is inhibited by acidic residues and is conserved among SR and SR‐related proteins (SRSF1, SRSF3, SRSF9, U1‐70K, and U2AF1).

Enhanced flow rate prediction of disturbed pipe flow using a shallow neural network

open access: yesFlow
Trustworthy volumetric flow measurements are essential in many applications such as power plant controls or district heating systems. Flow metering under disturbed flow conditions, such as downstream of bends, is a challenge and leads to errors of up to ...

Transient situations in traffic flow: Modelling the Mexico City Cuernavaca Highway

open access: yes, 2005
In this paper a recent variable anticipation cellular automata model for single-lane traffic flow is extended to analyze the situation of free and congested flow in the Highway from Mexico City to Cuernavaca.
