Mapping determinants of alternative protein food intake across 13 European countries: food system stakeholders’ perspectives

open access: yesInternational Journal of Behavioral Nutrition and Physical Activity
Background Using the system mapping approach, this study aimed to map the system of potential determinants of including alternative protein food (APF) into the daily diet across 13 European countries.

The food consumption of the world's seabirds [PDF]

open access: yesProceedings of the Royal Society of London. Series B: Biological Sciences, 2004
Improving knowledge of the population sizes of all the world's seabirds allows this provisional estimate of their annual food consumption. Knowing the body mass and energy density of prey it is possible to employ standard metabolic equations to estimate daily and hence annual consumption of a seabird.

Evaluating the effect of γ‐oryzanol on MASLD pathology using a medaka fish model

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
This study explores a liver disease called MASLD, which is increasing worldwide and can lead to serious damage. Researchers used medaka fish instead of rodents to test a food compound, γ‐oryzanol. Fish fed this compound had less liver fat and healthier gut bacteria.

Food consumption

open access: yes, 2016
Patterns of food consumption are of considerable interest to both nutritionists and anthropologists. Nutritionists may perceive that either qualitative or quantitative dietary inadequacies may lead to nutritional problems in the individual, household or community.

Delivery of DNA‐encoded vaccines and proteins in mice using cutaneous suction‐mediated transfection

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Cutaneous suction‐mediated transfection in mice for delivery of DNA‐encoded vaccines and proteins. A critical limitation of DNA vaccines and other therapeutics is transfection in vivo to produce the encoded antigens or therapeutic proteins. Cutaneous suction‐based methods have demonstrated effectiveness in many animal models and have been successfully ...

Identification of (20R)‐protopanaxadiol from Panax ginseng as a novel anti‐SARS‐CoV‐2 compound

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
We established a noninfectious BAC‐based SARS‐CoV‐2 replicon that enables antiviral screening under BSL‐2 conditions. Using this platform, we screened 373 food‐derived compounds and identified (20R)‐protopanaxadiol from Panax ginseng as a novel inhibitor of SARS‐CoV‐2 RNA replication, highlighting the value of safe replicon systems for antiviral ...

Structural studies and functional engineering of NanX: an anhydro‐sialic acid transporter from Escherichia coli

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Biophysical characterisation shows that NanX, a membrane transport protein from the major facilitator superfamily (MFS), forms both monomers and dimers after purification. AlphaFold modelling and substrate docking provide information on residues likely involved in substrate recognition for NanX and another MFS member, NanT.

Toward sustainable food consumption: an indicator framework for a food provisioning sustainable consumption corridor (SCC)

open access: yesGlobal Sustainability
Non-technical summary Growth in resource consumption and associated environmental degradation threatens food systems, with millions of people living in hunger globally, demonstrating the need for greater socio-ecological efficiency in food provisioning ...

De novo synthesis of short‐chain aldehydes and hydrocarbons secreted by the brown marmorated stink bug Halyomorpha halys

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
The brown marmorated stink bug, Halyomorpha halys, mainly secretes 4‐oxo‐(E)‐2‐hexenal, (E)‐2‐decenal, dodecane and tridecane, a mixture representative of that released by many heteropterans. We demonstrated that H. halys can synthesise these secretory components de novo using dietary glucose.
