A spatially resolved network spike in model neuronal cultures reveals nucleation centers, circular traveling waves and drifting spiral waves

open access: yes, 2017
We show that in model neuronal cultures, where the probability of interneuronal connection formation decreases exponentially with increasing distance between the neurons, there exists a small number of spatial nucleation centers of a network spike, from ...

Improving PARP inhibitor efficacy in bladder cancer without genetic BRCAness by combination with PLX51107

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Clinical trials on PARP inhibitors in urothelial carcinoma (UC) showed limited efficacy and a lack of predictive biomarkers. We propose SLFN5, SLFN11, and OAS1 as UC‐specific response predictors. We suggest Talazoparib as the better PARP inhibitor for UC than Olaparib.

Effects of radial flows on the chemical evolution of the Milky Way disk

open access: yes, 2011
The majority of chemical evolution models assume that the Galactic disk forms by means of infall of gas and divide the disk into several independent rings without exchange of matter between them.

In vitro models of cancer‐associated fibroblast heterogeneity uncover subtype‐specific effects of CRISPR perturbations

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Development of therapies targeting cancer‐associated fibroblasts (CAFs) necessitates preclinical model systems that faithfully represent CAF–tumor biology. We established an in vitro coculture system of patient‐derived pancreatic CAFs and tumor cell lines and demonstrated its recapitulation of primary CAF–tumor biology with single‐cell transcriptomics ...

Why are Trade Agreements Regional? [PDF]

open access: yes
This paper shows how distance may be used to coordinate on a unique equilibrium in which trade agreements are regional. Trade agreement formation is modeled as coalition formation.

Methylation biomarkers can distinguish pleural mesothelioma from healthy pleura and other pleural pathologies

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
We developed and validated a DNA methylation–based biomarker panel to distinguish pleural mesothelioma from other pleural conditions. Using the IMPRESS technology, we translated this panel into a clinically applicable assay. The resulting two classifier models demonstrated excellent performance, achieving high AUC values and strong diagnostic accuracy.

Certifying non-existence of undesired locally stable equilibria in formation shape control problems

open access: yes, 2013
A fundamental control problem for autonomous vehicle formations is formation shape control, in which the agents must maintain a prescribed formation shape using only information measured or communicated from neighboring agents.

Strength through diversity: how cancers thrive when clones cooperate

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Intratumor heterogeneity can offer direct benefits to the tumor through cooperation between different clones. In this review, Kuiken et al. discuss existing evidence for clonal cooperativity to identify overarching principles, and highlight how novel technological developments could address remaining open questions.

Potential therapeutic targeting of BKCa channels in glioblastoma treatment

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
This review summarizes current insights into the role of BKCa and mitoBKCa channels in glioblastoma biology, their potential classification as oncochannels, and the emerging pharmacological strategies targeting these channels, emphasizing the translational challenges in developing BKCa‐directed therapies for glioblastoma treatment.
