Studies on the activity of bepridil as a scavenger of free radicals
Biochemical Pharmacology, 1990Bepridil, a calcium antagonist with anti-anginal, anti-ischemic, and anti-arrhythmic properties was assessed for its ability to scavenge free radicals. Bepridil reduced the stable free radical 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazil (DPPH) in the molar ratio 2:1 and, in this respect, was as active as the reference anti-oxidants hydroquinone and alpha-tocopherol.

Free Radical Scavenging by Ethanol Extract of Propolis
International Journal of Radiation Biology, 1990The free radical scavenging ability of an ethanolic extract of propolis (EEP) was demonstrated by electron spin resonance spectroscopy, when 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) was treated with increasing concentrations of EEP. It was shown that the DPPH signal intensity was inversely related to the EEP concentration and to the reaction time.

Suppression of the formation of megamitochondria by scavengers for free radicals
Molecular Aspects of Medicine, 1997In the present study we have attempted to suppress the formation of megamitochondria by scavengers for free radicals since conditions for the formation of megamitochondria are often intimately related to the generation of free radicals. We employed three different experimental conditions to induce megamitochondria in the liver: ethanol, hydrazine and ...

Indole-3-carbinol as a scavenger of free radicals
IUBMB Life, 1996The ability of indole-3-carbinol (indole-3-methanol) to trap a metastable synthetic-free radical is presented. Indole-3-carbinol is capable of acting as a scavenger of free radicals in an in vitro system. The presence of indole-3-carbinol determines the disappearance of the free radicals, the reaction being time- and concentration-dependent.

Is Caffeine a Good Scavenger of Oxygenated Free Radicals?
The Journal of Physical Chemistry B, 2011The reactions of caffeine (CAF) with different reactive oxygen species (ROS) have been studied using density functional theory. Five mechanisms of reaction have been considered, namely, radical adduct formation (RAF), hydrogen atom transfer (HAT), single electron transfer (SET), sequential electron proton transfer (SEPT), and proton coupled electron ...

Combination of Treatment with Perfluorochemicals and Free Radical Scavengers
Biomaterials, Artificial Cells and Immobilization Biotechnology, 1992P-cyclohexylmorpholine, given as oxygen carrier of second generation, was tested in two experimental models: the ischemic intestine and the lung under hyperbaric oxygen condition. In both instances in separated groups either alpha-tocopherol or allopurinol was additionally given as oxygen free radical scavenger.

Scavenging effects of terbinafine on free radicals in vitro
British Journal of Dermatology, 1999One of the goals of antifungal therapy is to combine an anti-inflammatory activity with antimycotic properties, and therefore it is interesting to evaluate the capacity of active antifungal drugs to interfere with different phases of the inflammatory reaction.

Oxygen Free Radicals and Radical Scavengers in Neurology
1990Free radicals have become fashionable in recent years. Hundreds of articles and many regional and national meetings have been devoted to them. The first international symposium on free radicals will take place this year in Vienna. Free radicals seem to be involved in one way or another in many diseases, such as cancer, ischemia, circulatory shock ...

Intravitreal U75412E: A New Free Radical Scavenger
Ophthalmic Surgery, Lasers and Imaging Retina, 1991ABSTRACT Free-radical-mediated tissue damage is thought to be involved in a multitude of ophthalmic pathologies. Therefore, drugs that scavenge free radicals may find wide clinical application. A new chemical class of antiinflammatory agents, the 21-aminosteroids, has been developed as free radical scavengers.

Salvage of skeletal muscle with free radical scavengers
Journal of Vascular Surgery, 1987Extensive skeletal muscle necrosis may occur after prolonged ischemia to the lower extremity, with serious consequences both locally and systemically. The extent of necrosis is a combination of cellular damage that occurs during both the period of ischemia and the period of reperfusion.
