Fructose-sorbitol malabsorption

Important dietary carbohydrates such as fructose and sorbitol are incompletely absorbed in the normal small intestine. This malabsorption is sometimes associated with abdominal complaints and diarrhea development, symptoms indistinguishable from those of functional bowel disease.

Absorption of the carbohydrates in fruit juices was investigated by means of the hydrogen breath test in 15 healthy children aged 2.2‐6.4 years, consuming 15 ml kg’of each juice with a maximum of 375 ml.

Malabsorption of Fructose-Sorbitol Mixtures Interactions Causing Abdominal Distress
