The Role of MER Processing Pipelines for STN Functional Identification During DBS Surgery: A Feature-Based Machine Learning Approach

open access: yesBioengineering
Microelectrode recording (MER) is commonly used to validate preoperative targeting during subthalamic nucleus (STN) deep brain stimulation (DBS) surgery for Parkinson’s Disease (PD).

Adaptive Deep Brain Stimulation (aDBS) for Tourette Syndrome

open access: yesBrain Sciences, 2017
Deep brain stimulation (DBS) has emerged as a novel therapy for the treatment of several movement and neuropsychiatric disorders, and may also be suitable for the treatment of Tourette syndrome (TS).

Smaller is better: nanobodies meet NMR

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Nanobodies are single‐domain antigen‐binding fragments derived from camelid heavy chain antibodies. Their small size, high stability, and exceptional specificity make nanobodies uniquely useful probes for NMR studies of protein dynamics, transient conformational states, and protein–protein interactions.

Divergent intestinal barrier and neuroimmune responses to supervised exercise across fibromyalgia, irritable bowel syndrome, and their comorbidity phenotypes: a prospective interventional study

open access: yesFrontiers in Physiology
BackgroundFibromyalgia (FM) and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) are overlapping functional somatic syndromes characterized by gut-brain axis dysregulation and low-grade systemic inflammation.

Invisible but not inaccessible—Revealing transient oligomers formed by intrinsically disordered proteins with solution NMR and complementary methods

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Transient oligomers formed by intrinsically disordered proteins may be ‘invisible’ to direct detection yet remain accessible to solution NMR through equilibrium‐exchange measurements and pressure‐jump experiments. Complementary methods report on mass, stoichiometry, selected distance distributions, morphology, and internal packing.

Clinical decision-making in functional and hyperkinetic movement disorders

open access: yes, 2017
Objective: Functional or psychogenic movement disorders (FMD) present a diagnostic challenge. To diagnose FMD, clinicians must have experience with signs typical of FMD and distinguishing features from other hyperkinetic disorders.

Somatization, psychological distress, and quality of life across fibromyalgia, irritable bowel syndrome, and their comorbid phenotype: a cross-sectional clinical comparison

open access: yesFrontiers in Psychology
BackgroundFibromyalgia (FM) and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) are increasingly recognized as disorders involving central sensory processing and gut–brain axis dysregulation, often accompanied by autonomic and psychological disturbances.MethodsWe ...

Chinese expert consensus on programming deep brain stimulation for patients with Parkinson’s disease

open access: yesTranslational Neurodegeneration, 2018
Background Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) therapy for the treatment of Parkinson’s Disease (PD) is now a well-established option for some patients. Postoperative standardized programming processes can improve the level of postoperative management and ...

Membrane composition and thermodynamic identity as boundaries of life for synthetic cell research

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
What makes a cell a cell? The boundary of a living cell is not just a wall. Read as a Markov blanket, the membrane separates internal from external states, generating identity and non‐equilibrium order. Can this identity be rebuilt from scratch in a synthetic cell?

Psychogenic movement disorders in two children

open access: yes, 2003
Two schoolboys with diagnostic criteria for psychogenic movement disorder (PMD) are described: one with bizarre tremor of the right hand and a very slow and cautious gait, another with exaggerated trunk sway and collapses during standing and walking. (C)
