An upstream open reading frame regulates expression of the mitochondrial protein Slm35 and mitophagy flux

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This study reveals how the mitochondrial protein Slm35 is regulated in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The authors identify stress‐responsive DNA elements and two upstream open reading frames (uORFs) in the 5′ untranslated region of SLM35. One uORF restricts translation, and its mutation increases Slm35 protein levels and mitophagy.

Cell wall target fragment discovery using a low‐cost, minimal fragment library

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
LoCoFrag100 is a fragment library made up of 100 different compounds. Similarity between the fragments is minimized and 10 different fragments are mixed into a single cocktail, which is soaked to protein crystals. These crystals are analysed by X‐ray crystallography, revealing the binding modes of the bound fragment ligands.

A Machine Learning Approach for the Discovery of Ligand-Specific Functional Mechanisms of GPCRs

open access: yesMolecules, 2019
G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) play a key role in many cellular signaling mechanisms, and must select among multiple coupling possibilities in a ligand-specific manner in order to carry out a myriad of functions in diverse cellular contexts.

Enhanced Laplace Pressures for Functional Surfaces: Wicking, Switchability, and Selectivity

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Interfaces, 2023
Wetting functionalities of rough surfaces are largely determined by the Laplace pressure generated across liquid–gas interfaces formed within surface structures.

SELECTIVE DERIVATIVES FOR MONOTONE FUNCTIONS

open access: yesDemonstratio Mathematica, 1990
Let be \(\alpha\in(0,1)\), then a function \(s\) defined on the space of all closed intervals in \(R\) with values in \(R\) is called \(\alpha\)-balanced selection iff \[ s(\langle a,b\rangle)\in\left\langle{a+b\over 2}- {\alpha(b-a)\over 2},{a+b\over 2}+{\alpha(b-a)\over 2}\right\rangle.

The (Glg)ABCs of cyanobacteria: modelling of glycogen synthesis and functional divergence of glycogen synthases in Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We reconstituted Synechocystis glycogen synthesis in vitro from purified enzymes and showed that two GlgA isoenzymes produce glycogen with different architectures: GlgA1 yields denser, highly branched glycogen, whereas GlgA2 synthesizes longer, less‐branched chains.

Impact of functional synapse clusters on neuronal response selectivity

open access: yesNature Communications, 2020
The formation of functional synaptic clusters (FSCs) and their impact on somatic membrane potential (sVm) in vivo are poorly understood. Here, the authors develop a computational approach to show that FSCs have to form via local rather than global ...

Neural Intrinsic timescales in the macaque dorsal premotor cortex predict the strength of spatial response coding [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Our brain continuously receives information over multiple timescales that are differently processed across areas. In this study, we investigated the intrinsic timescale of neurons in the dorsal premotor cortex (PMd) of two rhesus macaques while ...

Organ‐specific redox imbalances in spinal muscular atrophy mice are partially rescued by SMN antisense oligonucleotides

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We identified a systemic, progressive loss of protein S‐glutathionylation—detected by nonreducing western blotting—alongside dysregulation of glutathione‐cycle enzymes in both neuronal and peripheral tissues of Taiwanese SMA mice. These alterations were partially rescued by SMN antisense oligonucleotide therapy, revealing persistent redox imbalance as ...

Feeding on multiple sources: towards a universal parameterization of the functional response of a generalist predator allowing for switching. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2013
Understanding of complex trophic interactions in ecosystems requires correct descriptions of the rate at which predators consume a variety of different prey species.
