Polyoxometalate-intercalated layered double hydroxides as efficient and recyclable bi-functional catalysts for cascade reactions [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
The polyoxometalate (POM) intercalated-layered double hydroxides (LDHs) have been widely used as heterogeneous catalysts. However, the application of POM-LDHs as bi-functional catalysts for cascade reaction has seldom been studied comparing with the ...

Tau acetylation at K331 has limited impact on tau pathology in vivo

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We mapped tau post‐translational modifications in humanized MAPT knock‐in mice and in amyloid‐bearing double knock‐in mice. Acetylation within the repeat domain, particularly around K331, showed modest increases under amyloid pathology. To test functional relevance, we generated MAPTK331Q knock‐in mice.

The selectivity, voltage-dependence and acid sensitivity of the tandem pore potassium channel TASK-1 : contributions of the pore domains [PDF]

open access: yes, 2007
We have investigated the contribution to ionic selectivity of residues in the selectivity filter and pore helices of the P1 and P2 domains in the acid sensitive potassium channel TASK-1.

Structural insights into an engineered feruloyl esterase with improved MHET degrading properties

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
A feruloyl esterase was engineered to mimic key features of MHETase, enhancing the degradation of PET oligomers. Structural and computational analysis reveal how a point mutation stabilizes the active site and reshapes the binding cleft, expading substrate scope.

On the functional window of the avian compass

open access: yes, 2017
The functional window is an experimentally observed property of the avian compass that refers to its selectivity around the geomagnetic field strength.

Deciphering the brain's codes [PDF]

open access: yes, 1991
The two sensory systems discussed use similar algorithms for the synthesis of the neuronal selectivity for the stimulus that releases a particular behavior, although the neural circuits, the brain sites involved, and even the species are different.

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

Preliminary specifications for the sex- and area-specific Operating Models for testing OMPs for the South Coast rock lobster resource [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
Johnston and Butterworth (2008b) presented some initial results for sex- and areaspecific age structured production models intended to serve as operating models for testing OMPs for the south coast rock lobster resource.

Inelastic scattering and local heating in atomic gold wires [PDF]

open access: yes, 2004
We present a method for including inelastic scattering in a first-principles density-functional computational scheme for molecular electronics. As an application, we study two geometries of four-atom gold wires corresponding to two different values of ...

A methionine‐lined active site governs carbocation stabilization and product specificity in a bacterial terpene synthase

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This study reveals a unique active site enriched in methionine residues and demonstrates that these residues play a critical role by stabilizing carbocation intermediates through novel sulfur–cation interactions. Structure‐guided mutagenesis further revealed variants with significantly altered product profiles, enhancing pseudopterosin formation. These
