Plasmodium Condensin Core Subunits SMC2/SMC4 Mediate Atypical Mitosis and Are Essential for Parasite Proliferation and Transmission [PDF]
Condensin is a multi-subunit protein complex regulating chromosome condensation and segregation during cell division. In Plasmodium spp., the causative agent of malaria, cell division is atypical and the role of condensin is unclear.

Gametocyte carriage in Plasmodium falciparum-infected travellers [PDF]
Abstract Background Gametocytes are the sexual stage of Plasmodium parasites. The determinants of gametocyte carriage have been studied extensively in endemic areas, but have rarely been explored in travellers with malaria.

Mesenchymal stem cells of the bone marrow raise infectivity of Plasmodium falciparum gametocytes
Plasmodium falciparum is a parasite that causes the deadly human disease, malaria, and exhibits a complex life cycle in human and mosquito hosts. In the sexual stages of the parasite, gametocytes mature in the human body and propagate malaria when they ...

Engineered malaria antigens enable in vivo bioconjugation to submicron biopolymer particles in E. coli. Two antigens are co‐tethered at high density and defined stoichiometry. The resulting thermostable particles elicit strong, durable antibody and T‐cell responses, conferring robust protection and blocking mosquito transmission.

Combination therapy that includes artemisinin derivatives cures most falciparum malaria infections. Lowering transmission by reducing gametocyte infectivity would be an additional benefit.

Low overall haemosporidian occurrence (3.4%; 13/383). Unexpected high lineage diversity (10 new host–parasite interactions). Novel Leucocytozoon lineage (GYPBAR01) in all European vultures except the griffon vulture. Plasmodium relictum (lineage SGS1) in adult red kites.

We characterized vaccine-induced cellular responses to rabies virus in naive adult volunteers. Contrary to current paradigms, we observed potent and prolonged in vitro NK cell cytokine production and degranulation responses after restimulation of PBMCs ...

Molecular evidence of incipient speciation within Anopheles gambiae s.s. in West Africa [PDF]
We karyotyped and identified by polymerase chain reaction restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) analysis Anopheles gambiae s.s. samples collected in several African countries. The data show the existence of two non-panmictic molecular forms,

Apicoplast genomic content and mitochondrial genomic content were found to be strongly correlated (rho = 0.93) for infections going from low to high. Apicoplast and mitochondrial genomic content were deemed as more predictive factors of parasitemia for different infection intensities.

Antibodies to PfsEGXP, an Early Gametocyte-Enriched Phosphoprotein, Predict Decreased Plasmodium falciparum Gametocyte Density in Humans [PDF]
Antigametocyte-specific immune responses may regulate Plasmodium falciparum gametocyte density, providing the rationale for pursuing transmission-blocking vaccines (TBVs) that target gametocytes in the human host.To identify novel antigametocyte TBV antigens, we interrogated the gametocyte proteome with our whole proteome differential screening method ...
